According to Spin Magazine (www.spin.com), Morrissey is the 17th greatest rock frontman of all time. The latest issue (Hives on cover) rates frontmen in four categories: sex appeal, presence, musical ability, and fashion sense. Moz gets an average score in all categories and comes out #17, a respectable showing to be sure in an American magazine. As always with Spin, the rankings are arbitrary and memories short. So Courtney Love ranks above Kurt Cobain, the decidedly un-original Justin Hawkins of the Darkness somehow ranks above Elvis Costello, David Lee Roth trounces Cobain, Trent Reznor, Costello, Joe Strummer, Bono, and a host of other luminaries, and the endlessly fascinating Jarvis Cocker has now been officially completely forgotten (at least in America).

They are just so utterly pointless.
They always contain at least ten people that in a nationwide poll, would not even be in the Top 1000. Basically, they are just magazine fillers, a cheap and easy way to generate a headline when not much else is going on....bit like Channel 4 and their endless Top 100 'telly clip' series.

Remember, he had sunk into obscurity post-1997 and was, with the music buying public, quite literally out of sight and out of mind.
So yeah, he's on the list, but only because he was the magazine cover star a mere eight weeks ago! If it wasn't for that small fact, I doubt he'd of even been thought of, let alone placed in at 17 or whatever it was.

Also. You might question Suede music, originality, etc... but I have to say Brett Anderson is (was) a great frontman. Spirited like F***.
Dave Gahan for me would be no.1.
As far as Elvis Costello is concerned...erm...i love him as a singer AND songwriter, but if we're talking about frontmanship, no i dont think he is up there. So my list would contain: Dave Gahan, Freddie Mercury, Robert Plant, Simon Le Bon, Mick Jagger, Joe Strummer, Bryan Ferry, John Lydon, Kurt Cobain, Jarvis Cocker, Marc Almond, Bono, Brett Anderson, Morrissey, Marilyn Manson, Robert Smith, Peter Murphy, Boy George, Adam Ant, Billy Idol, Jimmy Pursey, etc..etc...
