hello Valentina
I honestly don't have the interest. I always wanted to sing, with nothing at all blocking my path to the audience. An instrument is the perfect thing to hide behind - always busy adjusting pedals, fiddling with amp-settings, looking down, and never directly facing the very audience that you are presumably addressing.
Yes, when I was 14, I had a reasonably impressive drum kit, and when I heard Jerry Nolan and saw him on the cover of the New York Dolls' first album, I thought, That's me! Off I go! ... But it wasn't me, and I didn't go anywhere. This year, Deano [ex-drummer] gave me a kit to bash around on, but I think it's probably a bit late for me to suddenly turn up as the new drummer with New Found Glory. And yet ... ?"

If you haven't checked out Jobriath's music, please do so!

"They skin cats and dogs." Who cares! Morrissey wears leather shoes and wool. You ever see what they do to those sheep. It is all very nice sweet and caring. Way too make a generalization. Also, since when does Morrissey not play a show because he disagrees with the government. He has played, no lived, in an America that is run by a moron who takes orders from a fat bald manipulative devil. Morrissey pays them taxes for Christ sake. Don't kid yourself Morrrissey, if there was money to be made, you would play there. Anyone willing to write a fifteen page response to Joyce about a couple of books would play anywhere if the price was right. Get off your moral high horse, go take a bath, and write a song that doesn't sound like watered down Smiths stuff... And Morrisssey - the reason you don't play an instrument has nothging to do with "hiding behind the audience." Why does it all have to be a big production. What's wrong with this guy... Why can't he just give a straight answer without making it into a symbol.... At times I was interested in what he hd to say, other times I just wanted to smack him in the puss..

The tinny sound of Moz's home recording was much preferred, however, and made it onto the album. Which album I can't remember.... ........... now is my memory wrong here? I did some digging. On reflection I think it was Mark Nevin who did the home recording, but here is some evidence of Moz on Piano:

      Part 1:

Morrissey's own musical accomplishments begin and end with a one-fingered piano recital on Death Of A Disco Dancer on the last Smiths LP.
"It was the first time the group played it together and we just switched the tape on and didn't take it terribly seriously. And I just fell onto a piano and began to bang away. We kept the tape because it had some unnameable appeal."
And people kept the piano away from you after that?
"People kept away from me after that!"

      http://www.oz.net/~moz/quotes/diary.htm

      Part 2:

That had Morrissey on piano, of course. Did you know he was going to do that?
      Mike: "No. Neither did he."
Andy: "Well, he'd been tinkling on it downstairs."

      http://foreverill.com/interviews/post87/goodlt.htm

      Part 3 (Jonny Marr):

Finally, "Asleep" was played on the final night of the tour with Johnny Marr on piano. It was the only time this song was ever performed in front of an audience:

He still comes across as quiet adolescent. A lot teenagers go through a vegetarian stage, (he never stopped though) and although he loves animals his COMPLETE disinterest in HUMAN RIGHTS is absurb. Most people think Amensty International does good work but Morrissey would probably disagree. I hope he realises he's a person, (not a cat) which is why PEOPLE not animals turn up to his gigs AND that if people are scum then he is saying he is scum.

  • He sounds really smug, pompous and opinionated. At least when he was younger he was naive, shy and gauche. Now middle age has set in he's full of it. So inflexible it never occurs to him that his view is not the only view and why write all that stuff about obesity when he obviously doesn't care about people. What a joke! • No wonder he doesn't try to communicate with us very often. Surely the man is entitled to his opinion without being endlessly slagged for it. I'm all for pulling him up when need be but you lot take the buscuit. Remember the So-Low comment?

In his defence to various points made:

    1. I can't think of a single offensive thing that he said.

    2. He might have slagged America's food industry but he didn't defend anyone elses.

    3. Didn't he stop wearing leather some time ago?

    4. Why the hell should not wanting to play an instrument lead you to a written attack?

    5. What evidence to people have here that the general population has much worthwhile to offer? We endlessly turn out to vote for the likes of Bush and Blair, we rarely do a damn thing for anyone else all year and then go all cheery when it's Christmas. I don't buy it. Most people don't do anything to warrant pleasentness and niceties.

    6. As for the idiot who said most people grow out of vegetarianism. Where to start with that comment. See the comments above about the general population being scum. Maybe if you've grown out of adolescence you should really have developed your brain enough to know that you can eat very well without having to result to the slaughter of an animal so you can have a snack. I think it's rather pathetic to defend the eating of animals on any grounds other than you like eating them. I certainly don't see how you can attack someone for not eating them. Idiot.

I wonder why he uses apostrophes so frequently, what could it mean? I think perhaps the curve signifies his hatred for people with crooked teeth, he's having a sly dig. • This is from IMDB about Morrissey's favorite new movie that has been described as "My Big Fat Israeli Wedding":

"Zaza is a 32-year old Israeli bachelor, handsome and intelligent, and his family wants to see him married. But tradition dictates that Zaza has to choose a young virgin. She must be beautiful and from a good family, preferably rich. Zaza's parents, Yasha and Lily drag Zaza to meet potential brides and their families. Zaza has no choice. He plays along with his family, advocates of the suffocating traditions of their Georgian Jewish heritage. But Zaza always manages to somehow get out of being engaged. What his parents don't know is that Zaza is already in love. Judith is sensuous, strong and intriguing. She's also a divorcée with a 6-year-old daughter. So Zaza has kept Judith a secret from his family. He will have to choose between respect of the strict confines of family and tradition, or the love of his life."

  • People are scum as a whole. In the Grand scheme of things. Scum in the way William Burroughs, or Kurt Vonnegut (both scum), as well as many others, would say it. You know that our entire existence is a bane on the Earth. Polluting, creating garbage, murdering each other and animals, letting others starve and suffer, greed over caring, shitting, pissing, bombing beautiful forrests & generally taking up space. We're using up all these natural "resources" and turning them into poison, then re-palanting them into the earth for future generations to choke on ... That's just off the top, but you must see what he means. I like the fact that he's a little more bitter. That seems to happen to every writer I respect with age. I agree. Of course, we still have to be humans so we'll try to do what little we can to make the Murder of planet Earth as painless as possible.

  • Maybe if Morrissey took to drumming through a few instrumentals, it’d give his voice a break to prolong the performance. Has he been making peace with the drummer within?!

It’s such a treat when a new statement or dialogue like this is released. I succumb to a “surprised by joy” kind of feeling when the online messages pops up. Very nice.

I reckon Miriam from Eugene is chuffed as am I and my compadres (Dublin mention), but poor Vasilis! I thought they considered Morrissey a God there in Athens – remember the documentary! Was that one of the countries touted temporarily for a concert this year? There’s many a slip 'twixt cup and lip!

The ad lib on the Estonia question led to a well-presented, uncompromising, highly informed case. I think most people would adapt fairly quickly to more benign lifestyles, but something has to happen first to threaten the profit and power equation, and who knows if humans will survive that? Still I want to argue against the idea that the human race is scum as a whole, and feel so qualified because it occurs to me too often. It’s a failure first off that so much so-called achievement is actually mutilation. “What have they done to the earth? What have they done to our fair sister? Ravaged and plundered, And ripped her, And bit her; Stuck her with knives, In the side of the dawn, And tied her with fences, And dragged her down…”

Man of Vision also said it well. But at the same time, even within these economically driven systems, people are doing their best, trusting in authorities, trying to care for their loved ones, a la Homer Simpson! Better still, many who can face reality are making ethical choices, standing up for values, suggesting, nay demanding, sounder more holistic ways. There are many unsung heroes in our world.

How odd is Morrissey’s denial of faith in art! Yet he supports the onward march of feminism which seems to have made some gain only to incorporate those values e.g. competition, materialism, with which it originally contended. Art saves souls and is the air Morrissey seems to breathe – what’s going on? Maybe, as Kissmyshades or someone said before, it’s Morrissey over-correcting, over-stating, which is an art in itself; arresting and provocative. Is that what the situationists were about?

The film tip is to be pursued with curiosity. Morrissey obviously appreciates much in Sanctuary’s approach, so let’s hope they can withstand legal assaults, low market position, and evolve stronger and prouder under the essential management review. China is not alone in barbarism, either to animals or humans, but their record does stand out. There are of course some good bands around; Moz is such a convincing chest-beater! But, as he says himself: “Luckily, for me, I'm always unstoppably driven. It must end soon - for all our sakes ...”, even if we definitely don’t agree with the last bit!

Let’s hope there will be more rounds of questions and answers, maybe even a Christmas special?!!

Anyway, for the cretins that questioned the hooks and riffs comment that I also made.

Compare any Smiths song as an instrumental against any Moz song post viva hate. In general you will find that Marr's compositions were tunes and Boorer/Whyte/Day/Cobrin/Armstrong/Nevin etc compositions are chord progressions and little else. Nevin being the possible exception to this rule.

In closing therefore, the lyrics remain strong on the whole, the music bland on toast and Riley or anyone who can't see past Mogga...it's a shame.

  • As a long-time Morrissey and The Smiths fan, I for one look forward to, get excited about, and appreciate Morrissey's surprising decision to answer fan questions on any fan website...even if it is his biggest fan's website.

I think back to the rare interviews that would appear in the music rags when I was in high school and college, and the feeling of anticipation that was papable then is present now when the announcement of answered questions appears on this website.

Morrissey getting involved in any small way with his fans...even if all he gave were one-word answers (which I think he did on a few)...is enough to satisfy my curiosity and to give a little more insight into the man. Agreeing with him or disagreeing with him are both absolutely fine, and should be discussed on Morrissey's websites. I agree with a great deal of Morrissey's cynical outlook on the world, however, I disagree with his choice to abandon his Catholic/Christian faith. There is no doubt that if we extract God from the picture, the human race is tant-amount to cochroaches. Because I disagree with Moz on the religious points, on political points, and on dogs (I'm a cat person...most dogs smell...and then I'm the "bad-guy" because I don't want to pet your slobbering, hyper dog and then have to go shower afterwards before I can do anything because the smell of that damn dog will be on my hands for an hour.) I don't have the right to demonize him. If he's lying or misinformed...that's different.

However, through any disagreement, I share many more things in common with Moz, and that is why I am drawn to him as a devoted fan with checkbook in hand.

Tone down the venom towards Moz on this website, please, unless, of course, he begins bashing Bush like a clueless Hollywood-type...then he needs to be held in check.

It is a very mixed blessing to be brought back from the dead.
  • Has anyone at this website bought Uncut Smiths special edition? Please, if you bought it scan the pages for us and put it available.

    Thanks

  • Since my email message to you was unfortunately returned, I will use this board, for lack of option. Can you see the level of vapid and nasty "discussions" posted in these polls? There are, in case you are overlooking (or, if not overlooking, not reacting to it), plenty of them that like a virus attach themselves to the good ones and lower the site. It is a pity that a dynamic, spontaneous site like this one is just thrown to the wolves like that, with no control and no inspection you should be ensuring. All I can say is that this is a disrespectul attitude towards the well-intentioned posters that keep pumping this site's heart with good blood. I don't mean to slagg you or the site, just to express my feelings about this situation. Every time an intelligent and sensitive opinion gets posted, 10 other ones follow that seem really to come from people whose existence as humans, to me, is a wonder.

How about cleaning up the house a little bit for your gests?

  • Israeli site YNet informed Dover Kosashvili (Late Wedding director) of Morrissey's admiration of his film. His reply was "I don't know any Morrissey." When the journalist explained to him who Morrissey is ("he used to sing for the Smiths, they were really big during the '80s"), he said "What band? The Smiths? I really don't know. But it's very nice and interesting to know he likes the movie."

Strangely enough, there's also a link to Morrissey-Solo in that article, described as "Morrissey's official site"... go figure. The original article (in Hebrew) can be found at http://www.ynet.co.il/articles/0,7340,L-3186238,00 .html#n

  • He does sound a bit like a grumpy old man, and not as witty as he is with journalists, but he's always been extreme - liking peta, quoting the scum manifesto, etc.

  • Well when I was at school I said I wanted to sing, rather than play an instrument. It was just because I was lazy and didn't want to practise. Me thinks me and Moz have the same blood in our veins, except he's done slighly better out of it than me.
P.s. Has anyone wondered my Moz was crap academically. He seems really bright, why didn't he go to a grammar school or something. Me thinks laziness strikes again.

    Morrissey is DEFINITELY gay.
  • Do you think this could be gay-speak for "big package". As in my ex-drummer gave me one, and I saw Jerry Nolan's "drum kit" and was very impressed. I thought that's it... "I'm gay!"
    Your thoughts?

    Morrissey is DEFINITELY gay.
  • You people are mad. Do you really think Morrissey spends ONE MINUTE of his day thinking about you?!!! The only reason he does this "publicity" is because he want album/tour sales. Simple as. He could make up a bunch of lies on Q&A just because he was bored and you guys would still analyse it to death! You don't realise you are simply "faces in the crowd". He doesn't know us and doesn't care. It's just a job. Half the things he says are for a wind-up. He just says anything that stikes him, (although vegetarianism is a recurring theme), and call him Johnny Opposite you ask him the same questions next year you will get entirely different answers. If people didn't hang on his every word then he would probably realise that he needs to give proper interview.
