Before You Say No - O.C. Weekly
2MEX and Ikey Owens’ work-for-hire Look Daggers

“I’m still rapping how I rap,” says 2MEX. “I’ve been rapping the same way since I was 17, for real. But I’m just bringing out that little inner Morrissey—I can’t really sing, but I could at least transfer that emotion a little more. No disrespect to my hip-hop producers, but I’ll bring them a My Bloody Valentine record and they’ll look at me like . . . ‘I’m not even gonna listen to this!’ I like working with people that are into other stuff. Hip-hop gets stagnant—modern-day hip-hop, a lot of it’s really stagnant. But doing this?”

  • Does this even make sense? Do people just have to use the M-word to get their websites and articles plugged on here? What a load of old arse...

he sounds like a wanker, but maybe he was trying to say he was attempting to convey more emotion and reality into his lyrics, more personality as opposed to the usual rehashed generic crap rap music is known for. dropping moz's name in such a context makes sense from that perspective, as moz is arguably the most credible, legitimate, true to himself artist in music today. its easy to see why anyone would want or aspire to be more like moz in any way possible.

  • I had to admire the guy in the interview for his honesty - there's not that many hip-hoppers out there who'd dare admit to liking Moz (mind you, there's not many disciples of the quiff out there who admit to being rap fans - gotta cultivate and project that image of the aloof ascethete now, y'know)
As someone that endured ten terrifying minutes as a 19-year old defending my music tastes when my copy of 'Sheila Take A Bow' fell on the floor at college, as well as getting gobsmacked glances from goths for daring to wear a 'Viva Hate' t-shirt with 30-Below harlequin trackie bottoms while wheeling my old Moulton bike around Finsbury Park (God, that takes me back!), it seems that if you're broad-minded, you're an outcast. I had to endure two 11-year olds asking me recently if I was a hippy, because I wear flip-flops and sandals at the library where I work and I don't do the chav look like they do (I must be getting old!).
