Are Morrissey Fans The Silliest Petition Starters? - Rolling Stone Rock & Roll Daily

Anyone who caught Morrissey on Late Show With David Letterman June 29 saw arguably the world’s most famous vegetarian get a little uncomfortable as the show’s host made a few too many references to spare ribs — and even munched on a plate of them. The Moz later referred to the show as “The David Butterball Show,” and now some easily offended fans have launched a petition that demands a boycott of the Show and an apology from Letterman.

  • Yes Morrissey fans are a little ridiculous when it comes to stuff like this. David Letterman is great. It was purely coincidence. Dave has been doing bits like that for years. He used to give out canned hams to the crowd and it was funny.

Most of the world are not vegetarians. Also to the guy who said Morrissey is the worlds most famous vegetarian, I think you might've forgotten about Paul McCartney.

Look I love Morrissey. I can't wait to see him in 12 days in AC, but boycotting Letterman is just fricken silly. What are you going to watch Republican friendly Jay Leno???? Give me a break!

  • Would viewers of the show let us know if David Letterman gets wind of this and happens to refer to it on his show any time soon please?

  • I hate that people are now generalizing that all Moz fans are flakes who protest against talk show hosts who eat meat.

  • Letterman has been doing meaty comedy for years. If this offends vegetarians, they should have stopped watching Letterman long before Morrissey expressed his displeasure. The real problem is not that some Morrissey fans feel strongly about vegetarianism. It's that more than a handful of these fans have no mind of their own and think that starting a petition to boycott Letterman simply because The Leader is unhappy is not the same as donning "I'm with stupid" T-shirts at their next Moz concert. Rolling Stone is not painting a vulgar picture; we just have some ugly fans.

  • Okay, I agree, what Letterman did was ridiculous. I watched, and I was SHOCKED, because I knew Moz would be, and I knew fans would go apeshit. I don't blame him, and I don't blame them. But to create a petition is ridiculous. How was Letterman supposed to know people would get offended? He didn't actually do it to BE OFFENSIVE. I'm not trying to take sides here, but really. This is way too silly.

  • ... petitions. Hasn't anyone read the second part of the text?
Which names quite a few sillier petitions and so answers the question put in the title with a definite "no" :)

I still think this petition is quite silly, but then, if people take offense they should be allowed to say so.
