Hot Press Review - "I Am Not A Dog On A Chain" (5 Stars out of 10)

Hot Press Review- review indicates great album but looks like lost stars for political views

MORRRISEY – I AM NOT A DOG ON A CHAIN- BMG
5 Stars/10
RESPECTABLE RETURN FROM
INDIE ICON ISN'T ENOUGH TO
ESCAPE BLACK HOLE OF HIS
POLITICAL VIEWS
Morrissey has a new album and fans are confused as to how they should
feel. I Am Not A Dog On A Chain is
solid late-period Moz, with robust
production by his latest ongoing
collaborator Joe Chiccarelli (Spoon,
The Shins, Tori Amos).
Buuuut there is still the sticky
issue of Stephen Patrick's well-
documented far right views. He
popped up on the Jimmy Fallon
show wearing a badge advertising
the For Britain party (headbangers
shunned by Nigel Farage for their
extremism). And he has accused
London Mayor Sadiq Khan of
being unable to "talk properly".
To all of this we can now add his
one-way feud with The Guardian, as
the
trumpeted by his new line of "f***
The Guardian" merch (an actual
thing).
How do you get all that out
of your head whilst grooving to
his thoroughly agreeable new
record, which Moz himself has not
inaccurarely hailed as "the very
best of me"? It's impossible which
is why, as a Smiths diehard, you
may undergo a succession of mild
out-of-body experiences as the top-
drawer jangle pop of Jim Jim Falls'
and single 'Bobby, Don't You Think
They Know?' washes over you.
His humour has weathered the
years, at least. "Time will mould
you and craft you," he croons
darkly. "But when you're looking
away it will slide up and shaft you."
That's the opening line to closer,
'My Hurling Days Are Done'. It's
in the rich Morrissey tradition of
wry dirges and we can always do
with more indie icons referencing
the greatest sport in the world.
But it's so very odd enjoying this
album knowing the opinions of the
increasingly marginalised figure
behind it.

We need someone to tell us how to feel! we need someone to tell us how to think!

doh::cool:

Resplendent remark!
Was gonna rate this remark with a love, but because of certain opinions ya got it only gets a like.
I felt odd enjoyin' this remark because of certain opinions ya got.

Are they reviewing the album or reviewing Morrissey's (perceived) political views?

Odd.

Both.

Because apparently you can't enjoy music if you think it's made by someone with 'far right' opinions, even though his 'far right' opinions are mysteriously Not In His Work.

I wish for once Morrissey would relent & hire a pr who specialises in reputation management, because I can't stand being exposed to this much terrible journalism, apart from anything else.

I mean, Morrissey doesn't get paid for his off-kilter opinions - these idiots do & they can't even research them.

I know now why I don't buy Hotpress.
They indicate that this is a great album but can't enjoy it without feeling guilty due to their interpretation of Morrisseys (2 S's please)political views.
Therefore they can't give it the correct amount of stars, so as a music review it is null and void.
Symptomatic of the spineless cliched codswallop the Irish media serve up every day. "The black hole" of a political review in keeping with bland mediocre consensus reality. Why bother!

Reputation management? It’s a bit late for that. Morrissey is the one who constantly tears down his reputation with his own antics and statements. Plus he doesn’t care about his PR. He’s a not too bright drunk, racist, misogynistic, and narcissist.

It's never too late to change a reputation, esp when there's more evidence in favour of the person than against.

He might be wired to the moon, but he's not a racist or a misogynist & I couldn't care less if he was a drunk narcissist (practically all talent are drunk narcissists).

Actually it sounds like a very ordinary album being reviewed by someone who wishes they didn't have to listen to it.

It doesn't though, does it? The writer says he agrees with Morrissey's own opinion that it is 'the very best of me'. It apparently also contains 'top drawer jangle pop' and humour, and is a 'thoroughly agreeable new record'.

People like what they're hearing, but they won't admit it, because of Morrissey's political issues. It is really a pity.

What a waste of a review. Disagree with Morrissey’s political views, which one should. But at least review the album on its merits.

Have you seen the rest of UK politics? It's ALL a riot of insanity.

His political views aren't that bad, it's his taste in politicians & his blind love of conspiracy theories that implicate governments that are terrible, but not really deserving of this level of hype & outrage.

He has urged people to vote for a far-right political party, pure and simple. Now this will only upset and frighten off the left wing, Guardian-reading vegetarians. Trouble is, they made up 60% of his fanbase.
The heartbreaking thing is, if he only took the time to actually read the For Britain manifesto he would disown them straight away. Billions more expenditure on the military, protect the rich at all costs, deny climate change, remove all environmental taxes etc.. This is all totally against his and the Smiths' philosophy as expressed in song and/or in interview countless times over the years. It is utterly bonkers that he has fallen for these clowns, and it is proving to be his complete downfall. And all because the leader is a vegan, feminist lesbian.

They come with the same old bollocks every time , far right views for christ sake anyone would think he was Hitler.
Love you Moz cant wait till next week when i will see you at Wembley .

When a review mentions Nigel Farage before even talking about a song on the album you know it isn't actually an album review.

If they're still reading The Guardian, they're supporting transphobic fascism, so...

What a load of toss. I'm ashamed to be Irish reading that shit. Compare it to a proper review from HotPress from 1989 (review of the excellent Cure Prayer Tour): https://www.hotpress.com/music/archive-cures-1989-cover-story-22774279

Payback for Moz's comment about TQIDead in Autobiography?:
"Reviews had been very supportive apart from Ireland’s Hot Press whose title warned The Crown Slips. Well, it hadn’t. It stayed on more firmly fixed than ever before, so thank you Hot Press.”

When someone gives a bad review of something I think I’ll like, I definitely go online and piss my pants. So you guys are all doing great. You seem cool.

A review of an album that spends more time talking about Moz's political views is not a review. Unfortunately nobody these days seems capable of being objective, logical, professional or intelligent.
