L.A. Smiths/Morrissey Convention Sunday 3/20/08

i'm thinking about going... what kinds of events go on at these conventions? i've heard the merchandise sold there is overpriced.

i expect that. I'm thinking of going also. from where would you be going?

I'm hoping I don't waste my time and money flying out from Philadelphia for it if it's not going to be worth it.

Maybe we should organize an East Coast one. I can think of well over a dozen users just from NY to VA, and Philly would be a great central location.

that's not such a terrible idea. although i have no idea just how to go about starting to organize it. :)

No, me neither. But we have a couple tribute bands in the area, and we could always pick one of their shows as a jumping-off point. You know, go from the show to a bar that will let us commandeer their stereo system. And then proceed to get wasted.

i'm in on one condition.

the bar accepts my fake ID or it happens after july. :)

but we could definitely get a tribute band (or four) on board to help out! I know of a DJ who could spin (look at me and my fancy lingo) for the event, too!

HAHAHAHAHA! Fair enough. Let's see whether I'm burned out by July.

See? That's an excellent start! Know of any abandoned churches around Philly? Or Oddfellows halls? They're always good for all-night partying.

my apologies for being born too late :)
I know of some abandoned warehouses in not the greatest parts of town, but I know of a promoter who does a lot of DIY type shows (www.r5productions.com). The guy running that has access to plenty of venues and a night club which holds a "punk rock flea market" twice a year! ooh this is fun!

Surely someone has an idea about this?

I went to the 2003 convention which was a two day event.
The tribute band These Charming Men played a Smiths set the first night and a Morrissey set the following night.
There were stalls selling stuff, look a like competitions, quizzes of all kinds, and a disco each night at the end.

Jukebox Jury

It's been ages since I've gone to these LA convention's...at least a decade or so...but usually there will be a live performance from a cover band (all the times I went it was the Sweet & Tender Hooligans), music to dance to, look-a-like contest, other type of contest, items to purchase, and last but not least alcohol...:D

I'd say, go at least once...I went to at least 4 or 5 of these and I had fun....:guitar:

Some of you are actually looking forward to this? You gotta be freaking kidding me!

First of all, I don't mean any disrespect to my man Jay for posting the flyer. This is a Moz site, and any contributions of the ilk, are appreciated and expected.

Having said that, you mean to tell me there are Moz Angelinos that are hyped about this abortion? Let me tell you Moz fan: save your money. If you've gone once, you've gone 10 times. It's the same shpiel:

Overpriced/undersized Moz shirts that we've seen a million times before, and frankly, if you didn't already have it, what's the point by now?

Cheap buttons and bumper stickers made by April Juggs and sold by the Emily Strange twins.

"Bootlegs" of the type that have all floated around here once or 20 times before freely, now at around 11 bucks a pop if not more...

An appearance by Mal-Hack shedding a tear during his acoustic rendition of "Sunny" followed by shameless jocking at the bar for free drinks and pretending like everyone was SO there to see him....

Watered down drinks and loner Greasers who somehow get drunk off it and start dogging other guys that are alone with their chick....

The same drunk assholes that talk shit to the real people participating in the contests and quizzes yet cower in fear at the thought of being onstage unless it is to mosh during London...

and finally the futile efforts of some weak sideshow band that tries to make some money off of the Convention's lack of Morrissey himself....oh wait a minute...I already mentioned Jose didn't I?

Whoever hasn't been there before, it would be well advised to go. Why? Because you'll always kick yourself in the ASS for not going. How can anything "Smiths/Morrissey Convention" be that bad right?

You'll have a blast your first time, but it gets old next time around. Personally, if I want to meet old friends, i'll grab my Blackberry. If I want something cheap and quick, i'll grab my Nicole Peters collection.

Cheers
