Mike Joyce paid a visit to the chat today, and is going to put up "Never heard before Smiths songs" on his website in about a week. Here are some excerpts:

Due to the shock of him being in the chat, one fan stated:

"it's very cool that despite the differences in court with Moz you still are "out there" for the fans..."

I don't get into the chat room much anymore but hey I was incredibly bored at work and went in it yesterday and indeed was the one asking him about "new" Smiths tracks... People have always been skeptical of "The Drums" in the chat room but I verified it was really Mike Joyce because he knew details about our mutual friends he has met in person that only the real Mike Joyce would know... well anyways he will be emailing either Dave Tseng or myself the MP3's to post here - let's be glad that he's willing to share!!

What, so you're trying to tell me that you won't download them, eh sonny? You're trying to tell me that you think Mike Joyce is such a tosser that you won't visit his website simply to get these extra Smiths tracks sonny? Maybe Joyce was a bit-part player, but please tell me, name one drummer who made a band into what they are now? Answer briefly.

Let's face it, Morrissey's done bugger all worthwhile for quite a wee while now. At least Joyce is keeping interest up. OK, Joyce was background furniture, as you so put it. But he was still one quarter of the greatest band of all time. He was truly, first and foremost, a Smith. More than could be said, say, of Johnny Marr. He shows how much he cared about the band by starting the split.

Joyce still talks about the glory days, and that's fine. We're still clinging to the old days, aren't we sonny? Do you realise I've called you "sonny" three times in this post? I hope you have. Am I beginning to annoy you? Reply briefly.

I don't know abnout you sonny, but I'm going to get these tracks, beg borrow or steal...

  • I really enjoy hearing work in progess, alternative takes, and sketched ideas. Something tells me, however, that these tunes will never see the light of day. Moz can be a vicious bitch about this shit.

  • MP3's are nice, but MP3's can stop you from hearing all the quality of the songs you'd like to. So if there's something I'd like you (M.J.) to try...it's posting two versions of the song..but you say, "How can I?"

Encode one version in a quick and dirty 128 bitrate format and another in 256 bitrate format. Several reports have indicated that the 256 bitrate MP3 is the format in which even purists and audiophiles can't detect losses. Even better but more resource intensive would be SHN format! :D Thanks either way!!

  • Maybe there's a very good reason why these songs were not released in the first place? Maybe they actually suck?
It's quite exciting, of course, but I think they might disappoint those who expect songs of the same standard as before.
If they are actually good, why didn't Moz release them?

  • i visited his site in early december and it said then that the new site, featuring these unheard songs, would be online by the second week in december. i've been visiting frequently since then, only to find it still not up and running.

could it be true that i will finally get to hear them in a week??

  • Just so everyone doesn't get too excited, these are not totally new tracks. They will be more of alternative takes, mixes, and version of old Smiths songs. There are no completely "new" Smiths tracks.

  • People who slag off Mike Joyce and slam him as talentless or whatever are full of shit. If you want to slag people off, what about Warner Brothers who ignore unreleased outtakes/sessions and released the same old trash? Mike Joyce is a very talented drummer, and it's a damned hard instrument to play. I'm just glad that there are still some artists/musicians that care for fans.

Lets all keep all our fingers crossed for new tracks or maybe a good remix of How soon is now. ive only got 2 versions of that.

  • I've never been in such a deep fanship of a band like in the Smith case. Hearing of "new-old" material puts me into an excitement that would be rather suitable for a teenager. I simply want to own everything this band has ever produced.

Hey Mike, maybe I would like you, if only I could see you, if only I could meet you...

Please don't put your life in the hand of a rock 'n' roll band...
  • I have had a chance to hear at least one of these tracks, as had anyone who attended the first Smiths convention in Los Angeles a few years back..the one that Mike and Andy attended. Mike played at least a couple of them for the crowd.I can recall a different version of Rubber Ring with a more aggressive style, different background vocals and maybe even trumpets?! It's a bit blurry now. Others must have been there, help me out! I just figured it would all surface in the box set one day. These will only be different versions of released Smiths songs, unless Mike has some post-Johnny recordings before the rest of the band completely folded..wouldn't that be interesting....

    AUDIO NEWS

    Statement From Mike Joyce

    "Hello People...

Due to the legal implications of putting up the Smiths tracks. I am currently seeking advice as to the best way to get these tracks heard. I will keep you informed of any progress. Sorry About the delay.

    Love and Peace

    Mike

P.S. There is only one factor in this that is stopping me from putting these tracks up on this site. I'm sure you all know what/who that is....."
