Morrissey #40 in VH1 UK's 100 Greatest Men poll (audio clip)

Another sign that not everyone over here has forgotten about Stretford's finest, with a respectable #40 placing in yet another VH1 UK tedius, overly mainstream, public poll. Really, with a poll containing Robbie Williams as #1, I expected Morrissey to not have even made the top 100 never mind top 40. The entire top 100 can be found at the VH1 UK website.

The following audio file of the piece on Morrissey contains comments from the lovely Emma B (Radio 1), Badly Drawn Boy, Noel Gallagher, Dani Behr (BBC Childrens Presenter), John Peel and Clive Langer.

An anonymous person adds that Morrissey was "Introduced as 'One of the greatest lyricists of all time... but he was a bit mad' by Steve Kemp (Eastenders soapstar and ex-Spandeu Ballet)" and that Dani Behr was the one "who said she couldn't understand why ANYONE would listen to his suicidal lyrics...she's a cretin."

    (The only voice I recognize is John Peel's: "I think that they're very funny lyrics... and I cannot understand why people assume that what they do is essentialy miserable".)

    For instance, who was this?: "If you wanted to get into his world... there you go, that's it. And I went into his world, I think... and thought it was fantastic."

    Maybe we can have a little contest to see who can identify all the voices!

      Noel Gallagher is the one who says that Morrissey is the funniest lyricist ever and that he would stand and fight his corner.

      Badly Drawn Boy mentions how he wasn't a sad Morrissey lookalike and that he thinks Morrissey is underrated.

  • Morrissey deserves to be number 1.At least he`s mentioned on VH1 U.K. I sat through the 100 greatest albums on the U.S. version of Vh1 thinking the "The Queen is Dead" had to be on it.But The Smiths or Morrissey weren`t even mentioned.Now that`s just wrong.

    Now about that Dani person saying the lyrics are suicdal.Whomever that person is they obviously don`t know what they`re talking about.Morrissey`s lyric`s are just real.People always point out songs like "Asleep".But Morrissey`s lyrics are so funny.I always pictured "girlfriend in coma" like one of those mellow dramatic hospital scenes in soaps.They overact so much that it`s funny.I guess some people just don`t get his sense of humor.
