Meterosexuality - 3am Interview with Mark Simpson

METROSEXUALITY

"Northerness was crucial to The Smiths. Crucial because it gave them and Morrissey their scorn, their humour, their heart, their unpretentious pretentiousness and also their chippiness. The Smiths saved Englishness from the South who had held it captive in the basement of a posh house in West London. Since the 1980s it's become devastatingly clear that London and it's outer ring-road, the Home Counties, have nothing to do with England any more and in fact is set against it. The South East is now Global and Euro and, at a pinch, when all else fails, British long before it's English. England has been forgotten or buried by everyone who actually lives in England except northerners and London cabbies."

Andrew Stevens interviews Mark Simpson, author of Saint Morrissey, about Northerners, Top Gun and the 'metrosexual'.

  • North against South:it's an old question.
I'm too provincial to talk about it.

  • I'm currently three-quarters of the way through this biog and am not especially impressed by this book.

Simpson is clearly a man who is extremely self-absorbed: the book is as much about him as Morrissey. Further, his style is hard-going and he tries to be too clever. It is therefore not a free-flowing or enjoyable read. The book is more analytical than is necessary and thereby borders on the pretentious. Simpson will spend thousands of words giving his view on a few lyrics in a particular song. Too much. The songs speak for themselves. Listeners don't need a uinversity lecturer's style interpretation of emotional meanings.

Not a patch on Rogan's 'Severed Alliance', which is a 'straighter' biog. I couldn't put 'The Severed Alliance' down. With 'Saint Morrissey' I barely have the will to pick it up. Still, only another 50 pages to go. Will struggle on.

  • This is all incredibly true, I am a northerner who lives in London and find that leaving the outer bounds of the M25 and journeying north is like travelling to another country or indeed the recent past.Londoners feel closer to Europe than they do to Macclesfield and see little of interest for them beyond the south east bubble, sad but true.It is also the case that the term,'England,' when not applied to football is a term to be used only after firm medical advice. The smart and knowing,'Englishness,' of The Smiths was a temporary blip and was quickly subsumed by the majority contemporary voice of street savvy England in the form of Shaun Ryder, Liam Gallagher and others. Their northerness confirmed the south's prejudices against all who lived above Northampton, whereas Morrissey[and to a lesser degree Jarvis Cocker]confounded stereotyping by being smart, irreverent, witty and most dissarming of all...polite.
