National BBC Radio 2's Jeremy Vine said that 'Everyday is Like Sunday' has the best ever opening line in the history of rock.

Vine stated this after playing the song on his topical mid-morning current affairs/political show on national BBC Radio 2 on Monday 13.

On the 14th he played the opening line again and stated that it was the most imaginative and provoking first line he'd ever heard and how it set the stage for a totally brilliant song. This was backed up by listeners who'd emailed him too agree.

Later in the morning he played 'This Charming Man' halfway through a heated debate on prostitution !

  • "Trudging slowly over wet sand
    back to the bench
    where your clothes were stolen"

Yes, I agree. These are the best opening line(s) in the history of Pop.

Anyone who has gone to the beach can attest to this fact. You go take a dip, chances are your clothes will be nicked. This is especially true if you leave them on a public bench.

Also, look at the use of imagery. You don't exactly walk over wet sand now do you? You trudge, as it were.

"Skulking slowly over wet sand" is not bad either.

    *Sighs* Morrissey is grand.

There is a light that never goes out...
  • I repeat, absurd. The best opener has to be "It's time the tale were told, of how you took a child, and made him old..." from Reel around the fountain.
Or maybe JJ72's October Swimmer: "Dreams, of dying mothers, i awoke, my insides shudder..."
Or maybe: RF's 'Laura needs to grow': "Ho-Ho-Ho, Laura needs to grow..."

it thrills the pants off of me, quite literally
