Inside Out the BBC1 current affairs programme features Andy Rourke going back to the Salford Lads' Club for the first time since the '85 photo shoot for the Queen is Dead. The 10 minute piece co-presented by Rourke and Archie Swift (a member of the club for over 60 years) goes out at 7pm on February 2nd. It also features morrissey-solo.com reader Marvin Maldonado and his wife Delia from Guatemala - Smiths/Morrissey pilgrims all the way from Guatemala.

Marvin & Delia are also featured in 'One of the Lads' the doco made at the BBC with Andrea Watson, myself and featuring a voice-over from the Salford actor Christopher Eccleston (Cracker, Hillsborough, Our Friends in the North) about 100 years of the Salford Lads' Club. The short documentary retells the history of the club from its Baden-Powell beginnings; famous members (such as Albert Finney, Peter Hook, Graham Nash, etc) right up to the present day.

Most interesting for fans of the Smiths will be the opinions of the real Salford lads inside the club who volunteer their services every night to give the young people of Salford a secure environment to socialise and play sports - their views on the Smiths' fans & their regular pilgrimages to the club are contradictory to what you all may have been led to believe. When I asked the club secretary what he thought of the band he replied "if they're half as decent as their fans they must be a great set of lads".

'One of the Lads' can be viewed inside the Salford Lads' Club in the soon to be built Smiths Room.

Cheers to all Morrissey-Solo readers who helped us out for One of the Lads especially Martin Bisset - I owe you pint, pal.

  • Salford Lads (Score:2, Interesting)

I went down to SLC last May during the BBC 6 Music broadcast. Everyone involved in the club are absolute stars and know how to make you feel welcome. It was tea and toast all round that day.
It was great to hear the club got it's English Heritage listing.

Finally a big round of applause to the Ordsall community and the people who work so hard in making the club what it is today.
