BEYOND CURE

GET ready for a new rock rivalry: Robert Smith (above), singer for new wave heroes The Cure, sounds ready to pull fellow '80s icon Morrissey's pompadoured hair out. "He was constantly saying horrible things about [The Cure]," Smith sniffs to Entertainment Weekly. "In the end, I kind of snapped and started retaliating. And it turned into some kind of petty feud. I've never liked anything he's done musically, but I don't have any kind of strong feelings of animosity towards him as a person because I've never met him."

  • Last time I saw the Cure was in '00 and from what I saw, it looked as though Mr. Smith a bit of additional girth. I think that if he got a hold of the Mozzer, he'd snap him like the metaphorical twig that he is...... tough to pick a winner though, 'cause I respect both Robbie and Steve's (macho fightin' names ;) music equally

  • Er. You just have to look at the two of them to see who's in better shape. As long as Fat Bob doesn't sit on top of him, Moz would whip his chocolate chip chunky ass.

  • OK you got me. I was just trying to start a little contro if you hear me. Its true I wish both would just come together for once and make some tunes together. I mean if Robert can sing with Blink 182 surely they(MOZ + SMITH)can let the feud drop.

I'm so confused. No wonder I can never answer people when they ask, "what kind of music is that?"

  • The Cure and Robert Smith have always represented a great idea to me, cast away judgements about appearances, realize that we are programmed to believe what nomal is, and we need to fight norms to keep our liberty. Also that Art is every bit as important in music as talent so have some fun with music, entertainment and all art. Robert Smith has been just a cool guy dealing with the world in a straight foward manner, living his life his way. He even says his words were a knee jerk reaction to critism. Hey anybody could fall for that natural emotional reaction. I say too bad Morrissey doesn't get it, I love Morrissey but sometimes he gets a little picky and frankly sometimes it's his loss. I and genuinly feel he will miss something here due to "good taste".

  • The same reason why he bashed New Order and the Housemartins: they were the competition for The Smiths when the band was trying to establish itself. Period. That's it. The only reason.

    Why?

Because, it is impossible to say you like/love songs by The Smiths, but then turn around after listening to 2 Late, The Exploding Boy, Close to Me and about 30 others and say you hate the Cure. It's the same fucking genre, not worlds apart.

Keep your friends close, keep the competition closer...that's what Moz has done.

  • both Morrissey and Smith are by far the greatest lyricists that ever lived and both of there writing are similar and unique. it's a terrible shame that they didn't like each other enough to make a song together.

    days] about Robert Smiths's shoes.
Something like, he'd rather be shot to death,

  • And they are still standing after all these years. So maybe they are not really fighting themselves, but the rest of the music industry.

I find The cure and Morrissey ´s biggest achievement has been making heartfelt music that actually means something to people who actually pay attention to what music may say to them. They both do it diferently, but in no way lacking of passion or true emotions.

Moz is a true poet, but Robert has done with music what Moz does with words.

I find it hard to believe that either of them has any kind of disrespect towards the other... they´re just having a crack at the media by referring to this silly feud that doesnt even exist.

  • They can fight all they want I really couldn't give a flying shit. It's no great shame either that they're not friends cause it just couldn't happen, they're too different as people (not to say that this doesn't happen though). Both of their music has meant more to me than anything else ever has at different stages of my life and I think most fans if truthful would say this. Yes, they are musically different - completely, but they are branded together simply due to each of their ability to speak to their 'audience' like absolutely no-one else. No doubt they know they have this competition and I guess it's only natural to be possibly threatened by it, but like RS says 'So What?'

  • How can anybody compare The Cure to The Smiths! There is no contest The Cure are complete drivell. As for lyrics what more can I say Moz is a poet, as for Rob Smith he hasn't witten a decent song since 1969. Enough said!

  • morrissey mentioned not too long ago something about this situation from the smith's days. he pretty much said the exact same thing as robert smith, that he had nothing against him but didnt like the cure musically and that he only retaliated to a comment from mr smith. I actually think if they bumped into each other in the street they would probably like each other.

I hear Moz has been training with the Gracie Bros in West L.A. to get in shape for the tour.
If the fight goes to the ground Moz will have his makeup running like a bitch and he'll be slapping the mat for mercy.

  • Perhaps it is different in the US but I have never understood the idea that The Cure and The Smiths/Morrissey were in the same bracket.

The Cure were always regarded as Goth (or in early days post-punk) whereas Morrissey was always Indie. Apaprt from a number of fans liking both there really isn't a link.
