'First of the Gang' looks like it could finally get Moz back on mainstream UK Radio as it has been made 'record of the week' on Radio 2 (which has the biggest audience of all UK radio stations).

IBEH fared dreadfully on the UK airplay charts not even making the top 150, whereas all the Maladjusted singles went top 50. Such is the power of Radio 2, if they put 'FOTG' on their A-list, that alone could make it Morrissey's biggest ever radio airplay hit...

Go Moz!

  • But IBEH got to #3 on the sales chart even with poor airplay. If FOTGTD gets major airplay can we assume it will go to #1?

  • It needs airplay on Radio One. The Radio Two audience don't tend to buy singles, though it might help with album sales.

  • it will be time for a Morrissey-solo campaign. Is everyone agreed? To ignore one Morrissey single might be deemed a misfortune, but to ignore two would be careless.

  • It would be played on the Janice Long show (who would have played it anyway) and on the Ken Bruce show.

    The equivalent of a D (play)list position.

"... turn popular song into sickness"
  • and I never heard them play IBEH at all.
Let's face it, First of the Gang is a massively better song than IBEH, possibly his best single since the 1980's, and deserves a lot more radio airplay. not sure it could reach number one tho unless it was released in an incredibly slack week.

  • If you think there's even the remotest chance of it going to no. 1, you're insane. I'd be stunned if it went top 10. I'm not even 100% convinced that it'll go top 20.

Look at his track record of UK chart positions, (where singles have been taken from albums):
    Maladjusted singles:
    Alma Matters - 16
    Roy's Keen - 42
Satan Rejected My Soul - 39

    Southpaw singles:
    Dagenham Dave - 26
    The Boy Racer - 36

Vauxhall singles (the most apt comparison):
The More You Ignore Me - 8
Hold On To Your Friends - 47

Suffice to say, in all these cases the album came out after the first single was released. The subsequent singles sold poorly as a result. Regardless of how good the song is in this case, the same thing will happen (although hopefully it'll make the top 40 this time).

  • I predicted IBEH would go in at 7 at least and possibly higher. Of course it got to 3 selling 32,000 copies in its first week.

I think that this single will sell marginally less, perhaps 30,000 copies. All the Moz fans will buy multiple copies as before but a few thousand copies will drop off from casual indie fans who now have the album. Also the number of sales might just be held up by the new songs ans DVD features and the fact the song is so strong and will get decent airplay.

However, I'd be amazed by No. 1 - I think it could hit 3 just like IBEH.
