From the Reuters UK Business section:

Music firm Sanctuary on track
Mon 1 November, 2004 09:37

LONDON (Reuters) - Music firm Sanctuary is on track to meet market expectations for its financial year, boosted by acts ranging from lugubrious lyricist Morrissey to rowdy rabble rousers The Libertines, it says.

London-based Sanctuary SGP.L , whose 150,000 track-strong music catalogue makes it the world's largest independent owner of music intellectual property rights, said it expected to benefit in the future from new albums and major tours by disco divas Destiny's Child and ageing rockers Iron Maiden.

House broker Credit Suisse First Boston is forecasting a pretax profit of 18.3 million pounds for the year ending September 30.

Sales were boosted by Morrissey's "Your are The Quarry" album, which sold in excess of 700,000 copies worldwide and The Libertines's self-named Number 1 album.

"We continue to view the future with confidence in the belief that our business model provides the basis for sustainable growth and cash generation," the company said in a statement on Monday.

The company said it had continued to invest in new recorded products, with advances to artists continuing at a similar level to last year's 14 million pounds.

Sanctuary made several acquisitions this year, notably reggae catalogue, Creole Records, and artist management company TDM. It has since added artists multi-platinum selling urban artist Nelly, Mary J Blige and rock group Slipnot to its Artist Management arm. It expected fewer acquisitions in the future.

Sanctuary said merchandising had also performed well, particularly in the United States.

In early morning trading, Sanctuary shares were up 2.40 percent at 42-1/2 pence.

  • I couldn't be happier for Moz! He waited so long for a comeback, and we seemed to wait even longer and now his comeback album has got 700,000 copies sold. Congrats Moz!

  • A similar article appeared in the business section of todays Metro newspaper in the UK. Too bad they chose the Libertines for the picture and not Morrissey. Still good news for everyone really.

  • So is it safe to assume that we won't be hearing Moz talk poop about Destiny's Child anytime soon? :P

  • 700,000 well played old chap. Brilliant news. Sanctuary seem to be one serious outfit that sign everyone from RnB to clapped out old rock stars ;) I also read today that Morrissey was considering working on the Gorillaz new project with Daman Albarn and DJ Dangermouse to name but a few.. intereseting times ahead indeed.

  • I'm happy for Morrissey & his fans alike. These sales will likely secure the prospect of a much longer musical career. This is what we all want, I'm certain. Hopefully, Sanctuary will invest further & increase his recording allowance to a level he deserves where, for example, they can employ real string sections, instead of cheap synthesizers & tacky drum machines.

Furthermore, Sanctuary seems to have gone to extraordinary lengths to try and cash in on Moz's fans. For example: all those singles released in a ridiculous amount of formats. Also - those silly & cheaply assembled DVD bonus discs with such laughably miniscule amounts of Morrissey content.

I do like the fact I can buy more of his music if I want to. I will also not criticize Sanctuary for being a business - they must make money. However, I sometimes can't help but feeling I've been taken advantage of.

  • Congratulations to Morrissey and to everyone else that had anything to do with "You Are The Quarry".
After listening to this cd and seeing him perform several of the tracks live in concert, it's very evident he gave us something we haven't had since, in my opinion, "Your Arsenal" and the tour of the same release. After "Southpaw Grammar" and "Maladjusted", I wasn't sure if he was going to ever be able to accomplish something comparable to this again, as far as a successful cd and concert tour to follow it up. "AND I WONDER DOES ANYBODY FELL THE SAME WAY I DO?" (and is evil just something you are or something you do).

  • Worldwide wide sales are actually closer to a million than they're half a million, over 800,000 and counting.

  • ...with his other releases, including The Smiths albums?

Is there a website anywhere that shows an artists album sales anywhere?

How do Moz's sales compare to other "influential" but not heavely (radio) played artists?

  • 700 000 YATQ sold, what a great news. The thing is we sure get another album before 2010, which is indeed a great news and something we all hope for. Was YATQ a great album or an album which deserves NOT to be the one New-ex-old-Moz is famous for ? That's the question.
This album is not as good as it has sold. Synthetizers are awful. Lyrics are not his best ones (i still think Southpaw had great - short but- great lyrics). Melodies are sometimes stupid or inexistant. What makes this album so precious is we waited for so long AND the terrific concerts which followed. Those songs were transcended by tremendous interpretations. That's what we like in it : the shows, the voice, not the CD or vynil. Concerts recordings are so far more superior to the original albums it is probable Moz has sold 2 millions pirate material with the 700 000 originals.
