Sex, Prozac and rock 'n' roll: satirists turn on the 'Glum Rock' takeover of British pop music by Ciar Byrne, The Independent, Published : 29 March 2005

Excerpt:

In the new series, Benn laments: "Everything sounds like Coldplay now. No other sounds can be allowed ... Very restrained, not too much row ... This could be Embrace, Keane or Snow Patrol, Thirteen Senses sound like this as well I'm told..."

Benn's conjecture has prompted a flurry of debate in the pop music world where the miserablist tradition can be faithfully traced from Leonard Cohen to Morrissey and the Smiths, to such giants of modern-day gloom as Radiohead.

  • I am sick, really sick of Coldplay.

The only music worth listening to in the near future is the album of The Tears.

The title alone makes me laugh: Here Come The Tears.

It's the story of my life.

It is a very mixed blessing to be brought back from the dead.
  • Misery shmisery. I`m sick of half-assed journos coing out with this shit. Show the wit and wordplay in Radiohead, Coldplay, Keane et al. There was no wit either with Joy Division either, but the fact they sounded like they fucking meant their torment coupled with their innovative sound made them good.

  • The constant use of words like "miserable", "glum", and "mope" prove that most "journalists" aren't worth the newsprint their writing is printed on. They lazily copy what every over hack before them has said. It'd be refreshing to read something like:

"The Smiths are part of that English miserablist tradition that's been handed down to groups like Coldplay and Radiohead, but a quick listen to any one of their four studio albums shows that they're actually *nothing like* their so-called successors. The mantle of their wit, humour, wordplay and musical virtuosity has yet to be passed to any band of the modern era."

FAO Journalists - Feel free to copy the above quote. It'll make you sound smarter.

Do my eyes deceive me, or is Senna's Lotus sounding rough?
  • i don't really understand why people have been posting negatively about this article. why all the "journalists who lie" cliches? where does it criticize morrissey?

it seems more like all the coldplay lite bands are copping the flack. no complaints from me there, they are all pretty awful with keane being the worst of the bunch. but why does this mean all moz-solo attack dogs need to some out?

and for the english readers this article comes from that most beloved and respected instition radio 4, not exactly known for their shoddy tabloid journalism.
