  • So Moz beat David Bowie for the icon award last year! So many bands are citing Morrissey as an influence that he's presumably hot favourite for the inspiration category too this year.
    Nice news!

            A'level? Non.

            O'Level? Non, encore une fois.

Key Stage 2 SATs? Je ne pense pas.

Key Stage One Base Line Assessment (aged 4)? Ah! Oui! Bien sur! Ici! Maintenant vous parles!(Etc., carries on until someone interrupts with a grammatically suspect four-letter volley of mis-spelt expletives replete with what pupils these days think passes for punctuation).

NB The teacher is not afraid (yet) of the pupils, despite being "assaulted" (a punch on the arm - there I was, standing in the corridor, when, out of nowhere, 'kertwat' - good job I'm not John Prescott, or I'd have blown my career; I've always said that being a veggie makes one naturally less aggressive). That'll teach me to work in a PRU and try to change damaged minds.

Might possibly explain my slightly spiteful tirade.

            Bowie/Weller an icon?

Surely icons are visual - so Bowie yes (a bit), but Weller never.

Morrissey with flowers is perhaps the most iconic image in Rock. Wouldn't you agree?

Morrissey's dancing is the most unique and recognisable in Rock. Iconic, even.

            Morrissey with hearing aid.

            Morrissey wearing see-through shirt.

Morrissey with huge banners declaring Meat Is Murder or The Queen Is Dead.

            Morrissey's NHS specs.

            The quiff.

Bowie wore a bit of glam make-up (an image he wasn't responsible for) and Paul Weller looked like a mod.

            Compare, contrast and comment.

  • In this morning's Irish Times Listings section (p6 and 7)a two page interview with Maximo Park who are being hailed as the "next big thing".

The lead singer Paul Smith talks about how he bypassed the Britpop scene as influence and spent several years in his room listening to Joy Division and The Smths (Spot the cliche!!!).

    Exact text (excerpt)is as follows:

Along with their incendiary ability with the three- minute single, what shoould distinguish maximo Park from the pack is the fact that they sound like Britpop never happened and are untainted by its kitsch little Englander excesses.

Paul Smith (lead singer): "Given my age, that should have been the scene I was into but it all passed me by. I was more into Joy Division and The Smiths. I distinctly remember when Warner bought up the Morrissey/ Marr catalogue and they released those two compilations albums back in the mid 1990s and i listened to them in my bedroom for a few years. Then i took a swerve into post rock and bands such as Tortoise, and then I got back into rock with Radiohead- emotionally charged music.
What i really love, though, is the classic pop song structure- with a bit of chaos in there for good measure."

I've not heard any of their music but apparently their album A Certain Trigger is out today if anybody wants to take a chance?
    I don't work for them I swear!

Hmm... I dare because I am a cynic (although perhaps the term 'realist' is preferable). It just seems to me that he is always boasting about his transsexual boyfriend/girlfriend (can't remember what 'it' is), and he seems to be desperately trying to be controversial. Also, I just hate the idea behind 'this is for the poor'- it's stupid; if it's good music, it should be for anyone who appreciates it.

Is this who the working class would like to be represented by? A contrived druggie loser who just whinges about the oppression of his class in order to achieve fame and fortune? I hope not.

(Sorry to be mean, I'm not aiming it at you Roxanne. It just annoys me.)
