KROQ listeners were asked to vote for their favorite bands of all time (and, I can only assume that some listeners voted over and over and over again...) Smiths/Morrissey made it to #23 (one place above Blink 182), but it's hard to take the list seriously considering that Green Day was voted the #1 band of all time.

Some of the other amusing placements (all of whom were ranked higher than His Mozness) were No Doubt at #6, Linkin Park at #13, and System of a Down at #16.

K(orporate)ROQ, once heralded as THE great indie rock station, has since degenerated into a sad mix of MTV bands you can hear on just about any other Clear Channel-type station in the country. (Ok, so they do throw in some good stuff from time-to-time, but it's mainly crap!) The good news is, if you live in Los Angeles, you can still hear some kick-arse music on Indie 103.1.

  • Good to see Moz appreciated alongside all the commercial crap. Although I might just be executed for saying that I've always had a place for Green Day amongst my 'angry' music; but #1, what are people thinking?
I assume The Smiths are played on the radio in America. That's more than we get in Britain; someone might be able to correct me, as I hardly listen to the radio anymore, but I've never heard a Smiths track (or any Moz, pre-YATQ) over the airwaves in this country (I'm talking mid-90's onwards and during the day). Not even Virgin 1215 play them and they claim to be an alternative station. They play The Cure, why not The Smiths?

I vaguely remember that Morrissey was in the top 3 when KROQ did this list like 10 years ago. Does anyone else remember? -- I think Depeche and Nirvana were like the only ones ahead of Moz at that point in time. So unfortunate that Radiohead and The Smiths could be placed so low. Most of these bands wouldn't exist if it weren't for The Smiths. And Radiohead is pretty much the only relevant mainstream band out today.
