Looks like the compilation Hang The DJ previously described as "without Morrissey's approval or involvement" is now approved and called The Sound Of The Smiths. Sheridan Whiteside sends the link:

Morrissey and Marr collaborate for Smiths hits and rarities compilation (includes full tracklisting) - NME.com
Former Smiths singer and guitarist Morrissey and Johnny Marr are set to release a compilation of their old band's rarities in November.

Excerpt:
Morrissey came up with the title of the compilation – 'The Sound Of The Smiths' – while Marr supervised the mastering of the album.

The album will be available as either a one-disc or two-disc version. The one-disc version contains 23 of the band's singles or would-be singles – including songs such as 'Still Ill' and 'You Just Haven't Earned It Yet, Baby', which were originally intended to be singles but didn't end up getting released as such.

The second disc will contain 22 songs, including rare B-sides and live recordings. Included on the disc are the Troy Tate-produced 'Pretty Girls Make Graves', a cover of James' 'What's The World', and a live version of 'Meat Is Murder', the title track of The Smiths' 1985 UK Number One album.

Both discs will be available to download as well as being released on physical formats.

  • Morrissey must have been EXHAUSTED after coming up with that title, while lazy Marr did practically nothing!

  • I really like the second picture! It´s so rare that you see Morrissey sporting a toothy smile & this one actually looks genuine...it makes me happy to look at it.
Also the others look more natural & relaxed on the second picture (this also goes for Mike Joyce, even though he´s not smiling) & the athmosphere is very different to the first one. To see a band not looking serious/depressed/angry/sad/emo, etc. on a picture seems to have scarcity value nowadays & for that reason allone this is lovable & more interesting.

I meant to get the deluxe-edition anyway, now there´s another reason for it! :-)

And most of all I'm sick of the idiots on Morrissy-solo getting a boner about stuff like this. You really are a bunch of idiots on here. Why don't you save your money and go and buy some Kinder Eggs instead.

  • Interesting to find out that Morrissey and Marr collaborated on this release, but odd to remember that Morrissey did at one point disapprove of this compilation. (Also, makes one wonder about the particular circumstances under which the collaboration was done. I mean, did M&M actually ever consult/work together at any point?) Surprising too that either of them would approve the inclusion of TCM NY Vocal, given the band's disapproval of this particular mix at the time of its original release. (Personally, I'm thrilled it's on there. A revealing track.)

Hard to believe Morrissey came up with that terrible title. 'The Sound of The Smiths'. It's a bit of a no-brainer isn't it? 'Hang the DJ' was MUCH better, and was a far better example of Morrissey's self-deprecating humour. Really makes you worry about Our Moz, especially when you also consider the drab new sleeve for 'Southpaw'.

Btw, is anyone thinking that this might be bringing Morrissey and Marr close again?

  • ...that it's unimaginative. I think it's a nod to the somewhat recent Jam compilation (one of Mozzer's favorite groups) (and rightfully so).

Or really, like "World Of Morrissey," I think it's a reference to old-school record-company-titled comps of yore. Those generic, yet, all-inclusive, titles.

  • Morrissey's deal with Decca has fallen apart, has it not? So Moz is making a smart business decision by making a $$ deal with this album. He is trying to show the record industry he can dodge the bullets so to speak. He wants to come up on top. Seems Obvious to me that's all.

  • people are often misled by the idea that a 'remastered' album will sound better than the original. in fact, many 'remasterings' are just drastically reducing the dynamic range of the songs (the difference between the 'quiet' and the 'loud' bits) and turning songs into over-compressed radio-punch style things.

there's this assumption that it somehow improves things, as if they didnt know what they were doing when they mastered it in the first place.

i guarantee you this cd will sound 'louder' than the original songs, but that doesnt mean it will be better at all.

  • According to the Amazon tracklisting. Ugh. I'd rather they put the 7" edit of "How Soon Is Now" on there, though amazingly I knew some fans who used to fast forward the intro of "Last Night". Shocking.

A 7 Inch edit of "Barbarism" is also used, which is good in terms of rarities I suppose, but some songs there I wouldn't put on a Best Of The Smiths CD-R.

  • Probably just a tenuous semi-coincidence, but there is a radio show called "Sounds of the Sixties" which has been running since 1983 (the title of which may be a reference to something else for all I know).

  • the fact Marr has remastered it is a genuine move forward....and if the Moz approves all the better.

but if "still ill" and "you just haven't earned it yet.." were nearly singles so surely were "nowhere fast" and "there is a light.."..
and if the 7" box is of all the singles these "new" ones better be well packed or someone will suffer..and the labels better be the right colour and be pop out...
and the 7" versions must remain just that..
    that's all for now
