Johnny Marr: 'Will The Smiths reform? I've answered that nearly 900 different ways'

Johnny Marr believes he's come up with nearly 900 different answers to his most asked question: "Are The Smiths going to reform?"

Speaking in our brand new issue, Q320 out now, the guitarist who is just about to release his first solo album, The Messenger, says he is nearly always asked about his former band by interviewers.

"I think the total number of different answers I've given is 896. It's going to be a university module in its own right one day," Marr jokes in his Cash For Questions interview.

"I'm nearly always asked that [reunion] question in the same way, which is: Sorry I have to ask you this questions, I really have to, my editor will kill me if I don't, I'm sure you must be asked..."

I got sent a link to the Adam Carolla podcast - round about 18 minutes there's a tale of violence involving Morrissey and brisket. Really.

The podcast video is also on YouTube, the Morrissey related segment starting at 17:20 to around 21:30. I can't make out if this is referring to something recent, I wasn't able to find any cancellation for a show in Royal Oak that appears to be referenced.

Transcript:

(17:20) "Backstage in Detroit... I said to the road manager for Morrissey, 'What kind of guy is Morrissey? He seems tempermental, seems weird, seems moody, artistic...' He said, 'Nah, he's a regular guy, good to the crew, nice, easy going... you know, one time I went to a theater and because he's vegan and they were serving brisket upstairs he punched a guy, but other than that he's a really cool guy.'"

(19:25) "...Morrissey's playing, well he...

Steven Soderbergh on his current reading list
An anonymous person posts:

Steven Soderbergh on Quitting Hollywood, Getting the Best Out of J-Lo, and His Love of Girls - Vulture

"Steven Soderbergh has directed 26 films since his 1989 debut, sex, lies, and videotape — the behind-closed-doors portrait of yuppie Louisiana often credited with kick-starting the indie-film revolution of the nineties, released when he was only 26."

Based on a list you put together two years ago—of everything you read and watched between April 2010 and March 2011—you had no problem reading while you were making films. What are you reading now?
I tend to alternate between fiction and nonfiction. I just finished a wonderful novel by Paul Murray called Skippy Dies. Right before that, I finished Tony Fletcher’s book about the Smiths. They generated a lot of good music in a short time, then kind of burned out...

Wow ... surprised Melbourne gets a shout out for one of the best of the tour. Not that it wasn't an amazing show, but just that he was less talkative than any of the other shows I've seen him play and the crowd were sometimes slightly subdued, so I thought from her perspective it may have been one of the "off nights". But happy to be wrong and happy that he holds it as a positive experience so that I can stupidly hold out hope for another Aus tour before 2022 (assuming we're playing this 10 years game again).

Johnny Marr on the Smiths, ‘The Messenger’ and Going Solo After All These Years
- TIME.com

Excerpt:

Were you just not ready to go solo then?
I’ve been forming groups since I was 14 or 15. I had just come out of a group and wasn’t keen to form another one, but was keen to play with my friends and people I thought were interesting. Luckily I got a lot of invitations and that was unexpected and things took off in a way, which I hadn’t anticipated. The group I most wanted to be in was The The. Matt Johnson had asked me to join when I was 17. but I...
