The latest and last (for the meantime at least) issue of The Face magazine (May 2004) features a piece in the Hype section about a Morrissey puppet show:

"HAND IN GLOVE [how could the headline be anything else? - VB]

There's Abba The Musical, Queen The Musical and Rod Stewart The Musical. Now there's Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now - The Smiths The Musical. Nathan Evans is the puppetmaster, armed with a Casio keyboard and Morrissey in muppet form. He performs at London's cabaret clubs. He says: "The audience laugh at the funny bits. Sigh in the sad bits. Boo the baddies. Just like old-fashioned vaudeville, I guess." Part of Duckie's Olivier award-winning show C'est Barbican!, he also performs The Kate bush Comeback Show - a puppet version of Kate's last gig. The ultimate stage for Nathan's Smiths show would be the Salford Lads' Club, home to the first Smiths museum and a Mecca for Morrissey fans."

The piece is accompanied by a shot of the creator dressed in Smiths-era Moz garb, with two puppets atop his shoulders (one of Moz, the other a skinhead).

Also in the 'We're Lovin' It! Floating Our Boat in May' round-up in the Letters section, Morrissey is listed as one of the flavour's of the month.

As a Face contributor myself, I am pleased they have taken (however little) heed of my suggestion of Moz as due for some comeback coverage. I posted on the Face contributor's intranet that he would make a timely feature, with props from Face faves Franz Ferdinand et al currently popping up all over the place. Another contributor also suggested doing something on the Salford Lads' Club being turned into a Smiths museum.

Maybe we'll get to see more of the Mozzer on their hallowed pages if The Face finds another publisher. Here's hoping.

Page 39 of today's New York Post dedicates almost an entire page to the ongoing (read: boring) Robert Smith Vs. Morrissey Feud.

Apparently, "Morrissey fans are less flamboyant [than Cure fans]. They're more bookish than vampire-like." So claims Marc Spitz from Spin Magazine anyway.

Of possible interest, the small inset photo of Morrissey looks like a still from the IBEH video shoot. I'm sure someone will manage to scan the whole thing in.

I guess the press is low on news, but then again this IS the NY Post, drudging up old gossip . . . if you get a copy of today's NY Post, there are photos of both Moz and Bob, but unfortunately the online edition has no photos.

CLASH OF THE BRITONS - NY Post. Excerpt:

April 13, 2004 -- ROCK fans have been arguing about the Cure vs. the Smiths since the '80s, and with new albums due from the Cure and Morrissey, the debate isn't going to end anytime soon.

The latest edition of Mojo features the first indepth review of you are the quarry by Victoria Segal. The Lp is well recieved and there is a cool drawing of Moz in a white suit which is a spin off from the Elvis 68 comeback special.

I was at the Matt Sharp (ex-Weezer, Rentals) show last nite in Berkeley, CA. During his acoustic set he mentioned how he used to live in Berkeley years ago. "I used to wear a black turtleneck and listened to a lot of Morrissey". The audience laughed and cheered when he mentioned the Mozzer. I was quite pleased.

Henry Higgins writes:

It seems Morrissey is becoming quite the Mr Popular, having made his way along with snails, brooches, superclubs and chummies ( friendly kisses), onto the "going up" section of the Times Style magazine's "whats hot and whats not".

This column on page 7 on this Sunday Times sports a picture of Morrissey himself next to the short message:

" The King of Misery returns.
        Genius if you're a fan.
        Less if your not"

This is great publicity for Moz, but will it increase the number of glory hunter fans(highlighted in the recent poll) if being a fan is seen as a "cool" thing, along with wearing antique brooches, to do?

Venus de Mile End also writes:

This snippet is from The Sunday Times supplementary magazine, Style.

They have a vintage pic of Moz in full-throttle warble on the 'Going Up' end of their barometer of what is hot and not.

The comment reads: "The King of Misery returns. Genius if you're a fan. Less so if you're not."
