In the new issue of Time Magazine (the week of May 31st), there is an article on Morrissey, entitled "Not So Miserable Now." (link)

"At 45, Morrissey is still revered for being unhappy. But a new album suggests things may be looking up"

This was in Tuesday's The Sun newspaper (Link) - FASCINATING if true!

MORRISSEY snubbed the trendy bars of Manchester after his comeback show in the city on Saturday ā€“ to sneak off for a pint with comic PETER KAY. The singer appeared at a bash thrown by his label Sanctuary at The Lowry Hotel but after five minutes he jumped in a limo to meet his pal in cheap ā€™nā€™ cheerful Chorlton.

For those who don't know, Peter Kay is a very successful youngish stand-up comedian from the North of England (actually Bolton near Manchester) who specialises in simple observational comedy. His website is www.peterkay.co.uk

I called CBS Studios a little bit ago and they did confirm that Morrissey will not be there. They said that Phantom Planets will take his place. Oh well.

From ManchesterOnline (link):

LOOKS like there could be a mixed response from Morrissey fans to the latest book to be penned on the singer.

Morrissey: Scandal and Passion, by David Brett, is published by Robson Books on September 30, 2004..

And the author says that the former frontman of The Smiths could be in for some rum reading.

"I've gone into his private life as much as I dare, legally," he tells me.

"This is going to be a warts-and-all book. Fans and fanatics aren't going to like it, because they see him as walking on water, but no one's perfect.

"Morrissey is a normal human being, like everyone else, but I think that there will still be quite a few shocks."

From Amazon (Link):
Synopsis
Britain's most articulate singer-songwriter remains a complex individual whose lyrics opt for realism, opinion, waspish wit, irony, asexuality, melancholy and love. In this candid biography, Morrissey's friends and the members of his entourage speak frankly to David Brett to produce a fascinating study of the iconic star. It is packed with revelations; accusations of racism and fascism; confessions of physical abuse; suggestive, anarchic, witty, sexy, and never before seen letters to a penpal that read like Joe Orton; Morrissey's gay-bashing; the accusations of supporting paedophilia; High Court royalty battles and the public shaming; the attack on Cliff Richard; renegade fans' attempts to sabotage his career; his script submission to 'Coronation Street'. The book includes a full discography, numerous original photos, and a comprehensive bibliography.

Apparently, Andy would not rule out the possibility of a reunion one day. Errr..... perhaps someone should tell Morrissey?!

Also, re:the Morrissey gig, the article quotes Andy: "I would had loved to have gone but it would have been chaotic and too distracting for all parties concerned." But apparently a lot of fans DID see him on Saturday night at the MEN Arena. Is this true?

Morrissey is fifth in the Norwegian album sales charts.

I talked to the distributor yesterday and apparently Quarry hasn't been available for purchase at gas stations around the country this past week, and there's no way you'll make number 1 if your album isn't selling at the gas stations. It will be available at gas stations from this week, though Moz will never make #1 in the second week.

After the Apollo show on 5/4, two RS emplyees were by the exit taking pictures of the fans and asking them for their opinions of the show. That's how I found out about the upcoming article. I don't normally read rolling stone, but I did this week!

Haven't seen this up on the site, and I'm not surprised, it's pretty dire... but anyway, here's a caricature of our Moz (scan) which appeared in the broadsheet Scotland on Sunday, dated May 16th. The drawing illustrated an article called "Still a Charming Man?"; strictly by-the-numbers Moz article. Still, better than the drawing. The caricature misses by a mile. And why draw him so angry? He looks like he has just been forced to write out a cheque to Andy Rourke...

This Saturday (29th May 2004) at the Kings Cross Hotel, Sydney. Australia's most respected and longest running alternative night returns for a one off special. In fairness 'The Popscene Social' has been quiet for the last seven years, well okay, 18 months, but after promising for the whole of that 18 months to bring POPSCENE back to the weekend, at long last this Saturday we offer up the goods. The reason for our return? One word. MORRISSEY. Following a resurrection that would shatter Mel Gibson's beliefs, the rightly crowned Godfather of Indie returns and provokes not just the inevitable unconditional hero worship, but more so a renewed sense of reality in all of us. It's hard to imagine anyone not aware of the sheer god damn wrong-ness of this age. Be they as a victim of the wrongs or as a Pop Idol viewer, but how we've all slept through the evil. And how the Big Brothers recoiled in heart stopping dread when 'Irish Blood English Heart' landed at number two in the UK singles charts recently(aptly sandwiched between Eamon and Frankee no less). And how the leaders cursed the mass awakening of the pacified and caught their breath as Morrissey sold out all his scheduled gigs in minutes. Thank the Lord and F** you, of course we don't want Nickleback.

For the record 'You Are the Quarry' is completely ace. Even if it wasn't, how could it not be? No matter, it is and whilst it does take a little listening, once you've adjusted to the fact that life changing music IS still possible then the rewards are timeless.

This Saturday we'll be spinning all the Morrissey and Smiths you can handle along with the best music that Sydney and the world has to offer.

Hope you can make it.
