Johnny Marr - Night and Day

"Simple-minded cretins" because they don't like the same pop music as you, really? You sound like a Moz parody, trying to be arrogant and 'controversial' etc, etc. He got away with it because he was funny & had a way with words, you just sound daft.

On what planet does he do that?

    The Smiths A-Z: "Cemetry Gates"

One of Johnny's most beautiful, feather-light (and sadly most-butchered) compositions. Also one of my favourite Smiths stories - in that JM almost binned it, until he played it to Morrissey in his kitchen and Moz said, "That's IT, that's it, that's the song, play it again!"

Johnny Marr - Night and Day

You're right, I don't understand. Even if he is playing some kind of game, he's ended up with something a child could write and he decided to keep it. What's the larger statement in - " I feel I'm breakin' up / I been hung up (...) / Just wanna breathe in the hotspot"? It's nonsense.

Express: "The Smiths split ‘bruised me emotionally, it turned to s*** with Morrissey’ – Johnny Marr" via Uncut Magazine (January 13, 2022)

"What had happened since the serenity of our drive to Saddleworth Moor, when the coffin lid shifted and the old spark rose like a small miracle?" In Autobio, that was Morrissey's response to watching Johnny stick the knife in (presumably in an interview) - so you get a sense that he was hurt...

Yep. He realised then that slagging off Johnny to an audience of Smiths fans is a really bad idea.

The Smiths A-Z: "The Boy With the Thorn in His Side"

Have to disagree there - this song is quintessential Smiths, in that it's a perfect musical composition before words were ever added but Morrissey then goes and makes it even better. The way his voice climbs and falls on "If they don't believe me now, will they ever believe me?" is pure Moz...

The Smiths A-Z: "The Boy With the Thorn in His Side"

Simply the most lilting, gentle and genuinely uplifting guitar melody I've ever heard, with huge emotion in it and the perfect vocal from Morrissey. This song means the world to me. I always interpreted the "yodelling" as Morrissey just 'giving in' to a stellar melody and not wanting words to...

    Question English accents

Yeah, I think that was an affectation (in the early Smiths interviews). Completely different tone to his voice in the 2004 interview with Jonathan Ross, etc. I don't think that 'modern' Moz sounds camp at all.

He said 'close' with everyone but Morrissey, and loyal in the context of the bands he's been in. I wondered if what JM was getting at (with the loyalty comment) was that his desire not to disappoint his mates has sometimes trapped him in situations where he felt compelled to 'join' bands, when...

Still Northern, to my ears though. And the Irish thing.. it's only on some words. "Annie-way"

    Question English accents

He wasn't faking - some people just don't 'pick up' a local accent that much. It varies. Didn't he once say "I thank God for not giving me the Manchester accent"? Morrissey's voice has always sounded "posh Northern" with a slight Irish undertone. Johnny has quite a soft Mancunian accent, I'm...
