Cox Arena concert becomes a Moz pit of loving fans and tortured songs

Morrissey "Moz"

It was not entirely nice, but it was entirely fitting, that as Morrissey knelt toward his fans during Tuesday's concert at Cox Arena, he was batted in the head by a besotted admirer's bouquet.

Hey, love hurts.

That's what Morrissey -- "Moz," to his fans -- has been telling us in nearly every one of his songs over the past 15 years, dating to his earliest days with the much-missed British band the Smiths.

And that's certainly what the Morrissey faithful learned the last time the 40-year-old pop oddity appeared here, when he gave a lazy and petulant (not to mention short) performance two years ago at Hospitality Point.

This time around, the tortured soul formerly known as Steven Patrick Morrissey was on his best behavior. In fact, you might have to make that "formerly tortured soul," because while the songs still wallowed in heartache and self-doubt, the singer seemed bursting with a whole lotta love.

"It's wonderful to see your round happy faces ... and your bodies," he gushed after a rousing rendition of "Boy Racer," the second number in the 16-song, 80-minute show.

"You are very, very gracious. It's touching that you're all here tonight to hear these cheerful songs," he cooed after performing the deeply weird "November Spawned a Monster."

And when he came out to launch into the one-song encore -- a mournful version of the Smiths' "Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me" -- Morrissey all but consummated the affair, declaring: "With all of my heart, I love you!"

Quite a contrast from his 1997 concert, when he taunted the audience as it shivered in a frigid wind.

Tuesday's show was a tight affair musically, with consistently solid playing by Morrissey's four-piece band and a generous selection of songs that included four from his days with the Smiths.

One of those, the wistful and lyrical "Half a Person," was one of the night's high points. But Morrissey's singing was frequently interrupted by his attempts to drag one audience member or another onstage.

This happened so many times early in the concert that the stage began to resemble the set for a more affectionate version of "The Jerry Springer Show," complete with bouncer extricating lovelorn fans' limbs from about Morrissey's torso.

He was even feeling playful enough to pull a variation on the old "Is that a banana in your pocket?" gag -- producing said fruit from his coat and dangling it mischievously at his midsection during "Boy Racer."

This, predictably, elicited hoots and screams from the crowd of 2,922, similar to the hoots and screams that greeted Morrissey when he removed his T-shirt (twice).

About the only time the singer didn't appear to please the partisan audience was when he performed "Meat Is Murder," the Smiths' mordant meditation on the killing of animals for food.

As the song began, the arena's aisles suddenly grew busy with outward-bound traffic. (Presumably, the departees represented the audience's non-vegetarian demographic.)

Mostly, though, the show was a love-in, a chance for Morrissey to reconnect with his fans, and maybe make amends.

It's possible he recognizes that he can't afford to be too cavalier about his following: With no record deal (his former label, Mercury, has vaporized) and no new studio album since 1997's "Maladjusted," Morrissey is not exactly riding a career crest.

But while there were plenty of empty seats at Cox, there also was plenty of noise, and plenty of people who stuck around to hear Moz lament, Last night I dreamt that somebody loved me . . . Last night I felt real arms around me.

For this night, anyway, it was definitely still more than a dream.

Notes regarding the review from Abel:

*no one hit flowers during the show (I gave him two bouquets and saw no one hit him with flowers)

*and no one left during "Meat is Murder"

*and I was the only one to get onstage during 'Half a Person' (and Morrissey didn't stop singing)

I left during Meat Is Murder. Waited outside
to make sure he didn't play anything different for
his encore which of course he didn't. Then after
hearing the first note for the rather dissapointing choice for an encore song "Last Night I Dreamt..." I was out of there ahead of traffic. Had it been Dissapointed, or The Loop,
I would have stayed every night for the encore. I
did go to 9 shows on this tour and I was very
dissapointed in the small amount of change from night to night. I saw 4 Maladjusted concerts and
he played alot of different songs each night but
but he sadly avoided the viva hate - your arsenal
era back then. He still avoided Kill Uncle era
all together. I guess he still listens to the Journalist's Who Lie saying that it is his worst album. I find that it is his best.

I thought this was a fair review...very honest and accurate. I went to this show and was impressed by everything except the sound...initially. Good review.

I wish the Ventura show was as wonderful as this one was. The crowd at ventura was very crazy, too many fights and stage rushing, i could tell moz was getting irritated after like the 8th person trying to jump on him. All in all, the ventura show was magical as well because i was able to see the beautiful face of morrissey in person... please come to chicago

I totally agree with BrendA. The Ventura show was awesome. Moz though was a bit irratated by the arsehole who got on stage and tried to yell into Alain's mic, but unplugged him and Moz had to restart the song. I think Moz is honored by those who can get on stage and hug him...not maul him and the band.

The Hollywood show (1st show) was horrible from the crowd stand point. Peoply were getting crushed up front, but I was expecting that at the Palladium because of a Skinny Puppy show awhile back and not to mention a stabbing outside after the show!

Back to the San Diego show...I thought it was just OK because those of us who didn't have floor tickets had to enjoy the show from the seats. I was just glad to see him again and again and again! PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE COME BACK TO ARIZONA - MOZ!

I really loved this show. I went the the one 2 years ago and that show doesn't even come close to being as great as this year's! The person I went with was the first to make it on stage, the lucky boy! :) the only down side was... I got kicked in the head by everyone trying to make it on stage. Damnit! next time wear something besides Docs... :) Oh, I did get part of his shirt, the second time he threw it out! :) I loved it!

This show was cool. I was fortunate enough to be out on the floor. Boz got really pissed off when he started having guitar trouble. I thought he was about to smack the stage tech. A crowd of about 8 almost came to blows. They were all pulling on a shirt that Morrissey took off & threw into the crowd. Oh yeah, some idiot starting dancing as if no body else was around. Your lucky I decided to move out of your way before letting you bump into me.

Other highlights, a gorgeous(to say the least) girl went up on stage. She almost poked Morrissey's eyes out. Unlike others who got up on stage, she put the biggest smile on his face (ear to ear). It was nice to see that she pleased Morrissey so much. I have never seen a stage jumper recieve Morrissey's individual attention. I think he even forgot to sing a word or two.

As for the song "Meat is Murder", it sounded awesome (better than the LP version) & it was really profound. Toward the end, Morrissey asked, "do you know", "do you know how animals die?" This caused the crowd to go crazy. Every body keep cheering in an aimlessly fashion. Then Morrissey made his point. In a serious tone he said: "You dont" puased & concluded: "You really dont know."

Yes it was a memorable evening; and yes much better than 1997's appearence. But no one seems to recall the handsome young lad who got his jeans around his ankles as he went on to smother the Moz. Oh well, I guess I was the only one admiring his great ass.

Yes, Aesthetician, I do seem to remember that lad. Only because His ass floated over my head as he was making his way on stage :) Damn! I had a fun! :)
