Abstinence makes the heart go?

Just out of interest what do you guys think about the following:-

Abstinence from drinking alcohol.
Abstinence from smoking.
Abstinence from having sex.

I have given up all three and how come I don't feel spiritual,
and exulted? Huh?
I thought I would become the epitome of purity and maybe become
enlightened or something, not just be grumpy...
What am I doing wrong?
Or, maybe I should just do the stuff again, well at least some
of it anyway.....

Like to know who else in here is an abstainer.......

I don't know anything about anything, but this is interesting to me.

Mauve21, why did you give up those things? Were you trying to detox, get healthy, or where you aiming for something higher? What do you do with the time and money you're saving? What about your social life? And, more basically, are you always not doing these things? What I mean is, when you stop doing something (anything) at first you are not doing, which is a form of doing. You have to get past the not doing and fill the space with something else, something smaller so that the space gets smaller. Keep doing that until the space goes away.

Are you skint?

What made you think not doing those things would lead to enlightenment? What is enlightenment anyway? Maybe questioning the nature of enlightenment leads to enlightenment. Maybe we're all just talking bollocks.

(and I'm not an abstainer)

Yep, I'm wishing to get healthier. That's the thing.
Truly.
Thanks for the advice. I am bit by bit replacing these things
with other activities.
I'll get there I'm sure.
Without boring you with too many details, this year, my car
was repossessed and so I lost my job and have been quite
unwell.
So I am starting from scratch with a lot of things again......

I don't smoke so I can't comment on that. I don't think moderate drinking would do you any harm, although if your financial situation is a bit complicated (and I guess it is, cause you mentioned it several times), booze would be one thing you can save money on. But the question remains: do you really abstain from sex? Or there's just no-one to have sex with? (I guess it's the latter, cause you mentioned that too.)

Cigarettes and alcohol I can understand, but I don't see how abstaining from sex would help you be healthier?

I think Cornelius has found the worm hole of the internet, the old stuff he comes up with is amazing.

"Abstinence" from smoking an drinking is surely healthier than smoking and drinking. As far as sex goes, I guess it depends on how you practice it :blushing:

But I don't see why abstinence per se would make one feel spiritual.

If you want to become more healthy and have a not-grumpy attitude towards life, I'd suggest you reduce/don't eat animal products, take the habit of walking a lot, perhaps even long-distance running or at least some extended time for continuous physical exercise (at least 1 hour), refrain from lots of coffee and tea and become a volunteer in social work/activities and enjoy long nights of sleep.

That won't necessarily make you feel spiritual either - but it might help.

It works for me ;-)

Hey mauve21, I had to make a tear sheet once of my graphic design work. On the bottom right is a billboard I made for a non-profit group in the community. i thought you'd get a kick out of it. I'd been thinking about this silly project since you posted the thread. She's pregnant with a pillow. :p

Hey thanks for that. Personally, I do walk a lot, from one to three
kilometres a day, seeing as I don't have a car anymore I have to.
I do not eat a lot of animal products and having spent the last
ten years either volunteering or working in aged and personal care I am
now needing a rest as I have been depleted. Is hard to explain but
basically when I helped people I gave to much of myself and it has
left me rather drained. As far as sex goes, that doesn't really matter though, because until I feel better in myself I won't be looking for it and I actually would prefer to wait until I meet someone worthwhile anyway.
I do enjoy things in nature such as gardening and my cat.
I have a son to look after. I also play guitar and do artwork.
So I have these things to keep me occupied until I am able to
start working again....

Just wanted to say thank you for that very wise advice.
I will keep that in mind.:)
