Best of by collaborator

I think Jesse has steadily improved and diversified over time. The early guitar chuggers didn't really impress, but there have been several strong co-writes...

My Hurling Days are Done
Once I Saw the River Clean
I'm Not a Man
What Kind of People Live in These Houses?
Kiss Me a Lot
Smiler With Knife
Jim Jim Falls
I'm OK by Myself
The Youngest Was the Most Loved
In the Future When All's Well...

Gustavo and Mando have both co-written some strong songs and sometimes it has been the lyrics that have been a bigger failing.

Obviously Mark Nevin, Alain and Boz all have plenty of strong co-writes, but the truth is that the standard of Morrissey's solo collaborators has always been patchy.
No. Steven street and Alain weren’t patchy. And Nevin was barely patching. Boz is an over rated songwriter. And the others are lawnmower part song writer.

Agree. Never even thought about his songs. They are terrible.
"Earth is the Loneliest Planet", "In Your Lap" and "The Girl from Tel-Aviv..." ... absolute howlers. "Israel" is better.

you folks slay me !

Just imagine the songs he could have written with Nick Kent !

You don’t know what you got !

As far as the covers he's done I'd remove everything from California Son but I'd put "A Song From Under The Floorboards." There are some great live versions of that.

I'd love to know the particular cognitive disability that compels a person to rate "Art-Hounds" and "I'm Throwing My Arms Around Paris" above "Speedway." Surely we can't just chalk this one up to subjectivity.

Yeah they were, but everyone is entitled to their opinion.

After Southpaw Grammar and Maladjusted had played a significant role in almost killing Morrissey's career stone dead, let's be honest and say that nobody was praising Morrissey's collaborators. There are a fair few duff Morrissey/Whyte tracks out there.

Stephen Street did a fine job with Viva Hate, but he wasn't infallible. He has admitted the limitations to songs like Dial-a-Cliche, and the less said about Journalists Who Lie the better.

There is a difference between duff tracks like Papa Jack (although that is an example of poor vocal phrasing and terrible lyrics) and a lack of ability to consistently write songs that resemble accessible music. These current crop of writers’ music is bizarre. The song structures are a mess the melodies - if they exist - are boring. When you couple this with a lyricist who ham fists his words, you get Super Sale bin albums.

Yes "A Song From Under the Floorboards" should maybe be there. Some live covers should maybe be there too. Sorry for liking "Kiss Me A Lot".

Found Found Found was by Clive Langer.

Side note. One of my favorite run of singles was: Boxers, Sunny, Alma. I just love all three of these late first stage Morrissey.

I'd love to know the particular cognitive disability that compels a person to insult someone just because they rate a couple of songs differently.

I see that you've (perhaps sensibly) erased Dagenham Dave and The Boy Racer from your mind. ;)

As I said, everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

It's interesting though that for an album like Low in High School that the music received plenty of positive reviews in the press which certainly didn't happen for many of the 90s releases. Morrissey certainly wasn't at his best on that album imo, and the main issue was not with the collaborators.

Distinct lack of "I'm not a Man", easily Jesse's best co-write.

Stephen Street did a fine job with Viva Hate, but he wasn't infallible. He has admitted the limitations to songs like Dial-a-Cliche, and the less said about Journalists Who Lie the better.
See, this is where I think judging things are very tricky. Yes, there are tracks that clearly stand out as great musically, even without the vocal line (eg The More You Ignore Me, First of the Gang, pretty much everything Marr wrote), but in other places, who gets the blame? Morrissey's voice, lyrics and melody frequently transforms pretty standard musical backings into great songs, but sometimes the reverse is true.

Is 'Journalists Who Lie' objectively that much crapper musically than most of Street's compositions - or did Moz just not bring his A-game to that particular song?
