By Grand Central Station I Sat Down And Wept and its role in Morrissey's lyricism - An Essay
buddyonacloud
Summary:

When he was in The Smiths, Morrissey referenced multiple times Elizabeth Smart as being a big influence on the way he wrote his lyrics. I recently read her novella By Grand Central Station I Sat Down And Wept and I've come to the conclusion that its role in The Smiths' history has been underestimated quite a bit, especially when it comes to the Morrissey/Marr relationship.
Here's why.

I never understood the hype around "By Grand Central Station..." so it's interesting to see the lyrical influences, especially on Boy with the Thorn and Maudlin Street. This post actually makes me miss the Passions archive, which had an exhaustive list of Morrissey's literary and cultural references.

I think some of the conclusions about Morrissey/Marr are a bit far-fetched (though delightfully slashy :lbf:) - but I can see where you might see parallels. Interesting read!

There's absolutely no reason to call trans women freaks. You should be ashamed of yourself.

There's plenty of reason to call this site's master troll (who spent years calling anyone and everyone 'f*****s' btw) much worse, but I suspect you know that already.
