Morrissey 2020 airplay disaster - the stats are here

Here it is, folks.
'Compare my Radio' compiles the songs played on all the national BBC (and other major) radio stations over the last month.
What is there for Morrissey? One single song gets played once!
Unbelievable.
'Once I saw the River Clean' is the song in question, and it got played once on Radio 2.
Remember at the time, someone round here mentioned that this was just the start and would probably get moved to the playlist proper. Fat chance!
Jesse T and Joe C even tweeted about it!
Wonder who at the BBC decided they had to stop playing him (virtually) completely.
I know Vanessa Feltz (a presenter and one of the highest paid employees at the BBC) absolutely hates Morrissey, and said she used to cringe whenever she had to play his songs. Maybe she had a word with the management. It's all rather bizarre...

Yeah, he's got plenty of options, most of which he's stubbornly ignoring. He probably loves being an actual disgrace esp. as it's all bullshit so he knows someone will rescue his reputation eventually.

It isn't all bullshit, though, is it Nerak?
  • Sympathising with 'Tommy Robinson'
  • Expressing support for Nigel Farage
  • Cheering Brexit (this obviously doesn't necessarily make you racist or right wing - it's just another piece of the jigsaw puzzle)
  • Urging people to vote for a far-right political party
  • Declaring (wrongly) that we all prefer our own race
There's just too much of this stuff out there now and on record. The 'alternative' music scene has had enough - the radio stations, the record shops, the websites, the clubs. And unfortunately, beyond the world of the so called alternative music scene, no-one much liked him in the first place.

No one gives a shit and no one listens to the radio anymore anyway. How is this post on the front page? Well done on this waste of space.
Oh dear - such a tired line. We've got a new album (which most of us agree is great). The sales, sadly, have been his worst ever, largely due (in the UK) to radio stations refusing to play the songs. This means the prospect of a new record deal (and subsequent album) are now very much reduced, possibly to zero. You would give a shit about that, presumably? It's extra tragic because after all these years, he's finally managed to assemble a brilliant songwriter/producer team. His best for decades.

BBC Radio 2 is one of the BBC's two flagship national radio stations (the other being BBC Radio 1) and the most popular station in the United Kingdom with over 15 million weekly listeners.

It is bullshit.

It relies on misquotes & hysteria.

It's not going to last & it wouldn't even have taken off if he socialised & liked doing publicity.

Oh I'll bet Morrissey is concerned, but he's not going to do anything about it because it feeds into his persecution complex.

Interesting.

I would appreciate hearing more thoughts about how all this will be affecting Morrissey - from people who actually like the man and understand and empathisise with his situation.

The article is perhaps a bit misleading. It's not just about BBC Radio 2 (which is actually Europe's most popular station, not just the UKs).
Since the early 2000s, there have been four radio stations in the UK that will play a new Morrissey song if they like it. Radio 2, 6 Music, Radio X (formerly XfM) and Absolute Radio. They haven't all played every new single but at least one of them has. With First of the Gang and Spent the Day in Bed, they all put them on their A-lists giving him probably the two biggest airplay hits of his career, solo or Smith. Radio 2 was the most reliable, which has been handy for Morrissey as they have a huge audience - they even playlisted songs off his covers album and feeble rubbish like Jackie's Only Happy.
But all these stations were unanimous in their decision not to play any new songs off Dog on a Chain, despite the critical and fan consensus that these are his best songs in years. And on the extremely rare occasions when any of them has played a new song, they have felt it necessary to issue a disclaimer about Morrissey's personality. If you really can't see that something pretty drastic has happened, here, in terms of radio station attitude towards him in the last 24 months, and you're just dismissing it as one of those things that happens to 60 year olds, you're probably a little deluded. Radio 2 even A-listed the new (2020) Deacon Blue song, for f***s sake, and their singer is a couple of years older than Morrissey.
As for Vanessa Feltz, yes, she has the graveyard shift on Radio 2, but she also does a BBC Radio London show, and is close to being the BBC's most highly paid female 'star'. It's just speculation that she might have some influence. It would be fascinating to know what the truth is.
And, yes, these stations are still playing Morrissey songs (Absolute in particular). They just won't touch his new stuff.

Pretty sure presenting the ideas that there's a whole host of variables when explaining the perceived problem with (UK) airplay and that not everyone from yesteryear (in some people's eyes) is automatically promoted to top tier playlists are reasonably non-delusional concepts thank you.
FWD.

Of course it's bullshit, just look at your list of points, it's pathetic folk like you are still banging on about a few nothing bits and pieces that you somehow find controversial. You know what Morrissey has never been controversial in his life, he just happens to have an opinion and is prepared to put it out there, you don"t have to like it...to quote the man himself, "So don't get your knickers in a twist!!!"

Agree.

And Ricky works for the BBC. I think another one of DB does as well? I only know them through Lorraine (I didn't even know she was a singer for years! I thought she was always an actress).

You felching twats are a proper howl...

1300 physical sales - “It’s a grower and hit!”

Radio didn’t play it - “Nobody listens to the radio!”

Streams fall off after 2 weeks - “Real
Music fans buy the physical album!”

Nobody except the 14 registered users on this site give a rat’s ass - “Melvis is misunderstood and the rest of the world are scrambling to catch up with his brilliance!”

Back up his hole with the lot of you!

The joke isn’t funny anymore.
Weirdo ALERT!!!

The only opinions that matter to you are from those who like him?

This is a non story. The link is to a website that ceased over a year ago - check the songs most played and there's nothing recent in there. The page it links to is the final page on the week it closed down. The relevant source if you are interested in this sort of thing is www.airplaychart.com

On the front page to the right is a link station lists/charts which is the airplay charts of all UK stations. Last time I checked in March after the album was released there was not a dot from Morrissey, which was noted by lots of people a few weeks ago. Shame though, I disagree with others who say radio play isn't important as some of his new songs deserve wider hearing as opposed to tepid shite like the Blossoms which we hear loads of on stations like BBC Radio 1 and 2.

everyone prefers their own race is only wrong because 95% isn't everyone. Anyone who has lived in the real world and not just existed in theory land can plainly see this.

The site went down a year ago but returned after a few months. It is true, that single play of River Clean was the sole pairing of a morrissey song on national radio at the album's release. Got evidence to the contrary? By all means present it.

I think, therefore I Ham..

Morrissey has brought this all on himself.
It’s absolutely nothing to do with Vanessa Feltz, that is bizarre thinking and barrel scraping.

No one wants to play his records , because he is now known as “Racist Artist” no one or radio station wants to be associated with that

The new album is actually quite good, better than the last 3 anyway.

But Morrissey has alienated 90% of his audience, because they hate what he is now..

They’re hurt and confused by his actions, it’s like being let down by a close friend...
