Morrissey A-Z: "Our Frank"

If there’s one song that represents my gateway to Morrissey, it’s this one. Completely irresistible for me, as a teenage Stone Roses and New Order fan. The video is bonkers, and has absolutely no correlation with the song. Brilliant!

Love the lyrics, but have never ever cared for the song as a whole. The music and melody are annoying. If I were to rank the KU tracks, Our Frank would be near the bottom.

Like every song on 'KU' this one has divided us all...which is just as it should be! I think it is a great, stomping, daft, sing-along pop song. It doesn't stand up to too much analysis and isn't one of the essential Canon...but it brings back many happy memories. I had an enormous poster of the cover of 'OF' in my room at university...wish I still had it, the eye-watering amounts some of these posters go for now, but I gave it to some girl I was trying to impress. No, it didn't work.

Love it! Let's hope she's flogging it on eBay for £350 right now.

I don’t remember to have ever seen the clip, so that is making my day right now. I love that red shirt he’s wearing, much more sexy than that frankly vulgar red pullover.
I find the words appealing, but I can’t say that about the music.

I really like this song. Don’t know what the lyrics but the vocal is super catchy and phonetic and the instrumentation has some neat sounds

It’s a decent song catchy and all..

But never a single for me, never mind as a lead single as for his shirt,
Well it looks more like a blouse

Don’t know what the lyric are ?

Our frank and open
Deep conversations
They get me nowhere
They bring me down, so
Give it a rest, won't you?
Give me a cigarette
God give me patience
Just no more conversation
Oh, give us a drink
And make it quick
Or else I'm gonna be sick
Sick all over
Your frankly vulgar
Red pullover
Now see how the colors blend
Our frank and open
Deep conversations
They get me nowhere
They just bring me down, so
Give it a rest, won't you?
Now will you just give over?
The world may be ending
But look, I'm only human
So, give us a drink
And make it quick
Or else I'm gonna be sick
All over
Your frankly vulgar
Red pullover
Now see how the two colors blend, my friend
Won't somebody help?
Won't somebody stop me
From thinking
From thinking…

Sometimes the line "Your frankly vulgar,
Red pullover" makes me think of Bobby
Knight.
Guess ya never can tell just what these
lyrics will make ya think of.

Several have commented that this wasn't the best choice for KU's lead single... while I like other songs on the album... none jump out as an obviously better choice. I remember at the time it got heavy airplay on KROQ and definitely built anticipation for the album. Regardless of the lead single, KU was going to be a difficult and polarizing album for many fans.

Are aboot (said in my best pirate voice)

I think it's great. I love that guitar in the opening and the lyrics are pretty funny. Don't you ever want to say just about any random line in this song to someone? Plus this was a very exciting time to be a Morrissey fan. They played this on the "alternative" radio station before alternative switched meaning from Depeche Mode to Nirvana.
8/10 rating partially based on nostalgia.
... and let's not forget Pearl Jam! KROQ (the station I grew up on) lost all their independence when they were purchased by Clear Channel around 1990 I believe it was. In his book, "World In My Eyes," Richard Blade talks about the format changes, having to stick to approved playlists, etc. In fairness through "MORRISSEY AT KROQ" was done after the Clear Channel purchase. Still, I couldn't stand to listen after '94 or so.
