New Morrissey song played on BBC radio (with disclaimer) + Morrissey ridiculed on BBC R4 show

Long-term Morrissey/Smiths fan indie DJ (and TV bloke from the 80s), Gary Crowley, played River Clean on his BBC Radio London show a couple of nights ago. Said "I love this track" and was alerted to it by a couple of people (implying he hadn't bothered with the album). At the end he said (paraphrase) "that's a great track... if you can ignore all the other stuff about him".
Radio 4 comedy show tonight 6:30pm - comedian talked about how we breathe in billions of atoms in our lives. Probably the same ones that made up Oscar Wilde and Adolf Hitler - "that would explain Morrissey" (cue the biggest laugh of the evening).
That's where we are folks in 2020. Morrissey has become a cultural byword for the far right and racism. And when presenters do dare to play his latest songs, they apparently need to issue a disclaimer. Bit odd to think that some people claim he's turned a corner...

No, but he might be a disaster pragmatist aiming for a wide appeal that really just placates rather than achieves anything. And that might just mean he’s the worst of all worlds.

My partner is a Labour Party member; she voted for Starmer and is eager to have a Labour government at any price. I’m not sure I am. As you know, I voted Nandy and she was a compromise candidate for me.

I'd rather it was someone less Blairite, but I don't think we'll be near government much before the 2030s, so it's really about stopping the bleeding & hopefully putting some effort into working out how to adapt socialism to a post-industrial society without bringing back horrors like the third way, triangulation & spin.

If the Tories keep nationalising stuff at the rate they are, Labour could be out of business (literally) by the 2030s.

The pandemic made it worse, but becoming more 'social democratic' was always going to be one of their strategies. They saw how well it worked for the SNP, who went from being a fascist party to the Tartan Tories to centre-left in their positioning.

They might be able to offer a sense of security & belonging, that we'll struggle to match.

It could be a wilderness for a while.

When (having asked the poorest to subsidise the wealthy) the Tories start gifting these things back to the rich, Labour could have its moment in the sun again.

I'm a bit worried that this pandemic and all the additional money that's had to be ploughed into businesses may be an excuse for less spending when it's all over. I can see Covid 19 spending becoming the stock response to cutbacks down the line. I hope I'm wrong.
You’re not wrong. VAT will go up, for sure. Tax for the wealthiest will go down—defended by ‘a need to kickstart Britain’ or some such shite. And Corbyn will be blamed for Covid-19, somehow.

They will try to claw it back - but having won their new working-class vote, I don't think they'll chuck it away that recklessly. Unless they get cocky.

It's amazing how the Government suddenly find Billions under the mattress though after years of austerity when they couldn't find a farthing in the piggy bank last few years. If it helps people now I'm thankful for that but why does it take this pandemic for them to notice 1000's of homeless folks, NHS not having enough staff or equipment etc etc It's a Knockabout World for sure.

In the past it was always 'Labour overspending' the Tories used to justify their cutbacks. Now they could justifiably point to 'Covid 19' spending as a reason. This pandemic has come at the wrong time when a newly elected Tory Party have come into office promising to spend on the poor. Let's hope the Tory Party I've come to know and hate over so many years really have had a massive sea change in outlook.

They could & they will by stealth - but at the moment I don't see them wanting to go back to the austerity tag because that might give Labour an inroad. They've been scooping up all the groups that feel Labour has abandoned them (which is near everyone) so unless they take a mad turn or Labour has to close or is unbelievably unpopular I don't see them openly making deep cuts.

Although - politics is full of mad turns, so...

They’ve not changed. Presently, they are not spending the money of the 1922 Committee. In fact, they’re protecting the latter’s investments by borrowing money that the poorest will be told they owe. Just as they did in 2009.

One of the big mistakes the left of the Labour Party consistently make is to think that the population of the U.K. have any interest in socialism, least of all the type of demographic that the Labour Party are supposed to represent the interests of. For all his faults, Blair at least understood that - that’s why he won 3 elections.

Oh please grow up, which part of voting for Brexit makes anyone a right winger? It's done, get over it, it's happening... if you are even part of the UK population at all. Taking back control of those things was the strapline to the campaign, and which 52% of the UK voted on.
God, you didn't believe all that crap about 'taking back control' did you? What a dupe. How is it right wing? Look at the people who engineeered brexit, the most Thatcherite, right wing, neo-liberal, deregulation maniac element of the Tory Party, Rhees-Mogg, Duncan Smith, Priti Patel, and others, do you really think these people are any friends of left wing values? They got they wanted by playing the anit-immigration card and stirring up that xenophobic sentiment so the working class were duped, (like you, a dupe) into voting against their best interests so these cunning reptiles can now really get to work dismantling the welfare state, and what they call EU 'red tape, by which any kind of environmental, employment, or animal or human rights protection. If Steve Bannon backeed it you know it is a bad idea. And how is WTO rules taking back control? We will have to follow trade rules just like EU trade rules under WTO. The UK didn't make WTO rules, America (mainly) did and they're more anti-democratic than anything in the EU. The riots in Seattle were about opposing WTO rules for that reason. Yet you don't have a clue what I'm talking about do you, you uneducated buffoon. You do nothing to dispel the imag eof brexiters as poorly informed thickos. There's a sucker born every minute and you, Mozmar, are it.

Blair was a great politician, and he remains a great communicator. He was just in the wrong party. Should have been Liberal or Con. Put simply, his policies increased the gap between highest and lowest earners, and overall inequality. What he was ever doing in the Labour party is one of the greatest mysteries in political history.

The majority of the UK (52%) voted Brexit. It has nothing to do with being left/right wing or centre. We voted to leave the European Union & take back our rights to govern ourselves, take back control of our borders, our laws, & our money. Brexit isn't/wasn't a right wing movement, so please educate yourself & stop spouting ill informed rubbish.

Under it companies can sue govenrments if they pass laws that hinder their trade overruling, therein, the will of the people and democracy.
