"Best known for his work with The Smiths, The Cranberries, and Blur, today we are talking with English music producer, Stephen Street!

Street began his musical career in the late 1970s playing in various bands in London. He then started at Island Records as an in-house assistant and then as an in-house engineer.

The Smiths and Morrissey

One of Street’s first jobs as in-house engineer was for a session for The Smiths’s “Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now”. He then worked on their album Meat Is Murder, with Morrissey and Marr producing for the first time.

Street continued to work with The Smiths, working as an engineer on their album The Queen Is Dead before assuming a producer role for Strangeways, Here We Come, their final album.

After The Smiths broke up, Street worked with Morrissey as a producer and co-songwriter on his album Viva Hate. This album reached No. 1, spawning two top 10 hits in the UK. Street went on to co-write and produce two further singles for Morrissey which appeared on Bona Drag.

Blur

After hearing “She’s So High”, Blur’s first single, Street contacted their manager. Soon after he produced their second single “There’s No Other Way”, although he did not produce the album as a whole. Street produced Blur’s next four albums: Modern Life Is Rubbish, Parklife, The Great Escape and Blur.

Street produced Blur’s 2015 album The Magic Whip, their first since the band’s reformation with Coxon.

The Cranberries

In 1992, Street started working with Irish band The Cranberries on their debut album Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can’t We?. The album turned out to be a huge success in the U.S. In 1994, Street worked with the band again on their second album No Need to Argue.

Street worked with the band on their fifth album Wake Up and Smell the Coffee and the two extra tracks that were recorded for their 2002 best of album Stars: “Stars” and “New New York”.

Street also produced their sixth studio album Roses, released in 2012. He also produced their final album In the End, released in 2019.

In February 2020, it was announced Street will receive the Outstanding Achievement Award at the upcoming Music Producer’s Guild Awards."

Racist puns are still hateful and hurtful, Karen. Ask an Asian person how funny they are.

Oh, that's just bollocks.

Not to mention the only reason linking the virus to China became an issue is because the Chinese government felt the situation had damaged their reputation.

It's amazing they're keeping it up now we have the British variant & even the 5G bats are an ancient meme.

Edit: coincidently - Glenn Greenwald has been off on one all day about this. From his timeline:

Don't try to reason with her. She's just one step behind the village idiot here. Morrissey could eat babies, she would still "explain" it's just the press out to get him, his words were twisted / taken out of context / his shyness blah blah blah...
Of course she would be the first to get offended is she was called, don't know "Karen the macaron", were she overweight (which I am assume she is). But bad puns are different for Morrissey, because...he is Morrissey :)

Isn't it your job to read the room? Check out the Twitterverse in light of the racist violence against Asian Americans. You're way off on this, you and Moz are on the wrong side of history.

Nerak is a huge Morrissey fan.

Morrissey made a point about the wet markets and animal cruelty in China. Morrissey cares about animals and animal rights. Morrissey is a vegan he doesn't eat eggs he wouldn't keep chickens for their eggs.

In communist China they kill and persecute Christians. Muslims are treated very badly in China. Some in Hong-Kong are coming to live in Britain because they feel safer in Britain.

If Chinese-Americans are being attacked in America that is terrible because it isn't their fault at all about the Coronavirus. 🙁 They are American citizens! I don't understand why Morrissey is responsible for what is going on in the USA and the prejudice about Chinese-Americans? Alex Belfield and others have used that pun. I don't understand why people only seem to criticise Morrissey but not Alex Belfield or others who say similar things?

No - you're way off.

Bots exploiting a mass shooting to spread a narrative are bots exploiting a mass shooting.

America has white supremacists, they'll hate on that basis.

The spate of attacks on Asian Americans have also been linked to theft & in the shooting to 'sex addiction'.

Bullsh*t helps no one.

Where was the mass shooting? Was this on the news?

What has this to do with sex addiction? I heard some of the gang crime stuff is to do with drug dealing.

Shut up, Andrea.

8 people were murdered at 3 massage parlours - the murderer has apparently claimed he's a sex addict & the parlours were temptation.

Twitter piled on with its usual dramas.

Morrissey amplified the hate with his stupid Kung flu post. You can’t explain away hate and racism. It’s wrong when Trump does it, yes he used the same phrase and it’s wrong when Morrissey does it.

You're spreading out of date bullsh*t.

Which is a pathetic way to spend your life.

The Quest for Relevancy has moved on to being about hatred of sex workers & Christian Supremacy.

Out of date? Aren't you defending stuff Morrissey said in the 1980s? Who is the pathetic one here?

The reason they are trying to avoid the racist hate crime tag for this "man" is because it carries harsher penalties. Who is spreading misinformation? He killed 8 people, 6 of them Asian women. Words create a climate of hate, translating into action. If you think words don't matter, why are you even a Morrissey fan?

It's out of date discourse on Twitter.

You're pathetic for seeking it out & bringing it here & trying to pretend a pun on Central has anything to do with America's gun violence - most of which is driven by poverty & committed by men.

You should be campaigning for practical change & not trying to pin the blame on a singer obsessed with the meat trade who should be causing the deaths of butchers & bullfighters in their thousands if his words translated into action but mysteriously isn't.

It's no different to blaming horror comics for youth crime, or any of the other moral panics people have because it's cheap, easy & these days, tweetable.

Nerak if Donald Trump, Alex Belfield and others have used the same pun that Morrissey used. Why is it only Morrissey who is criticised?

I'm sure they've all been criticised by the people who dislike them.

That's what people do instead taking real action about real problems.
