Russell Mael 'disillusioned’ by Morrissey’s recent comments

Sparks singer ‘disillusioned’ by Morrissey comments - BT
The former Smiths singer is a long-time admirer of Russell and Ron Mael’s music.

Excerpt:

Sparks singer Russell Mael has described comments Morrissey made in April about politics and race and last year in response to the Manchester terror attack as “ill-conceived and wrong”.

Mael, whose pop-rock band is famously beloved by the former Smiths singer and who is a fan of Morrissey himself, added that he “does not understand” the remarks.

Morrissey recently made comments where he suggested people should give far-right political party For Britain a chance and that halal meat production required “certification that can only be given by supporters of Isis”.

Following the bombing at an Ariana Grande concert in the Manchester Arena in May 2017, the singer implied in a statement that politicians were scared to call the attacker an Islamist extremist.

Asked for his thoughts on the singer’s comments, Mael told the Press Association: “I’m totally in agreement with anybody being disillusioned because I am as well.

“It seemed so inconsistent, all these perspectives that he has on those various issues, just stupid, dumb kind of things.

“I obviously don’t agree with any of these things. They’re just so ill-conceived and wrong.”

He added: “It’s just a pity. When you’re a fan of somebody you want to be a fan in all sorts of ways.

“You may be like ‘I still really like the music, but the person, I can’t agree with their stance’.

“I’m like all the people that don’t understand what is in his mind. I don’t understand.”

I wonder how Morrissey will respond to this being such a huge fan of Sparks.

"To lose a friend may be regarded as a misfortune. To lose all of them looks like carelesness."
You're losing all of your friends.

Are you feeling well adjusted at the mo? Frankly?

Wow. That's going to piss him off. I do wonder if there is anybody whose opinion would stop him in his tracks and make him re-think. Chrissie Hynde? Linder? Or would he just cut them out of his life and carry on?

Well that's certainly something for the girl with everything.

I thought this in-joke between the pals Sparks and Morrissey was quite a catchy tune when it was first released.

Mother.

Obviously Morrissey has to be willing to accept responsibility for his comments but this article saddens me. It’s his birthday! The baiting couldn’t be set aside for one day? It’s timing and subject are designed to be hurtful.

We have to give racists a day off because it's their birthday? f*** that shit.

He'd do one of two things:

- Continue to appreciate their work and still draw influences as the bigger man
- Burn his Sparks collection

I think he’ll struggle to shift tickets this time round. Perhaps hearing this from someone he admires will help to focus his attention? Perhaps I’m clutching at straws too.

They must be a big influence because I just know a handful of songs and I can already see two blatant references to Sparks. Listen to" when I'm with you" and see if you don't go "ha!" yourselves. There might be a lot more but to be able to spot references you'd have to know M's favourite bands' full discography, and unless you're the same age as him, that's hard. Also it's difficult to start being passionate about a band past a certain age I find. Especially if they look like grandpas and not boy Pablo (I'm ageist.)
Of all the bands he loved, they're probably the one that interests me the most though. (I once went to a New York Dolls gig without knowing anything about them, out of curiosity, and that was a BIG mistake. I kept wondering when Mick Jagger was going to turn up.)

I guess Russell has just discovered that Morrissey was, er, a bit, er, special. Seems extraordinary..., but it's hard from the outside to know who actually knows what Morrissey is capable of and is still able to call him a friend. Like, someone who's seen the worst and the best and is still here. All the people who seem to fit that description are enablers, who largely profited from their "special" friend's antics in some way. Linder would probably still have Morrissey's back if he personally escorted people who speak too fast to the gas chamber. It's hard for us common people, not to feel disgust at such " loyalty." These people probably think that success rhymes with mess and they make sure Morrissey never tidies his head.
Russell Mael, on the other hand, seems to have a brain and a heart and probably doesn't need to piss people off on a daily basis to feel he's achieved something. He was bound to be disappointed in Morrissey some day.

(Morrissey, not to alarm you or anything, but Ron is looking at you funny.)
