Strange/unexpected Moz references?

JOHN PEEL’s FESTIVE FIFTY – 1983

The video here is HAND IN GLOVE by THE SMITHS at #9 on the Festive Fifty of 1983.

In what was the first Festive Fifty chart to feature session tracks voted for in sufficient numbers to be placed, this was a list dominated by New Order, Cocteau Twins, The Smiths and The Fall.

“As punk and new wave now faded decently into happy and inspirational memories, their influence thankfully didn't wane and the mid-eighties "indie" scene was now being born with apparently innumerable creative pathways opening up,” wrote Mark Whitby in his brilliant book ‘The Festive Fifty’.

“Indicative of this are the first stirrings of the Smiths and Billy Bragg, the emergence of the Cocteau Twins as a genuinely musical force and generally a great year for Ivo Watt-Russell's 4AD label.”

“While Factory had listed eleven tracks in the 1982 all-time charts, these had all been Joy Division/New Order recordings. 4AD placed ten spread spread across four different acts...Xmal Deutschland became the first band from a non-English speaking nation ever to feature in the Festive Fifty.”

Review of a book of Herman Melville's poetry mentions Morrissey -

Celebrating Herman Melville, the poet by Colin Fleming
https://www.washingtonpost.com/ente...20112e-c801-11e9-a4f3-c081a126de70_story.html

"Pale ravener of horrible meat” sounds like a Morrissey lyric, doesn’t it? That’s from “The Maldive Shark,” the tight, singsong account of the partnership between a Jaws Jr. and his pilot fish chums who hang out around his teeth, unscathed. You’re never far away from metaphor with Melville. But he’s generous — you can disregard that metaphor and revel in the sonic experience or the story.

William was played at the warm up in the hearts v hibs game a few days ago.

I was listening to KROQ in LA this morning and they had a segment about people who had named their children after celebrities. Of course, this being LA, someone had named their child Morrissey. "Who knew he'd turn out to be a Nazi?" exclaimed one of the DJs. Morrissey really needs to straighten out his public image.

December 2012 , this is what Morrissey had requested in his dressing room at that time:

1 x clean (scale free) cordless kettle capable of boiling water to 100oc / 230oF
Black tea (bags) - Ceylon
Paper towels / box Kleenex / paper napkins
1 high quality naturally scented candle, ie Fig / Green Tea / Orange Blossom / Vanilla
Organic Mature Vegetarian Cheddar Cheese (Dubliner brand preferred )
2% milk - organic - prefer Horizon brand with cow on box. - OR M&S SOY -- 6 large bottles still water - Volvic or Fiji only (3 iced, 3 room temp)
6 small bottles still water - Volvic or Fiji only (3 iced, 3 room temp)

A long running, student-written Canadian University newspaper article that uses Morrissey to start a more general art / artist discussion:

Problematic Artists, Oh Dear
Nice art, shame about the artist

By Daisy Sprenger - January 27, 2020.

Excerpt:

"Morrissey is an interesting example because of his utter transformation from symbol of counterculture to oppressor. It’s doubtful that in the wake of the hateful alt-right espousals of his middle age that he deserves a four page spread in Rolling Stone magazine. Morrissey’s current politics are condemnable, but does that mean that we should never listen to “Louder Than Bombs” ever again? "

Of all things, the wee soul picked out Brexit as an example of his oppressing. I did did want to ask exactly who (& how) one Indie singer oppresses with the outcome of a National referendum.
