have you heard Sinead O'Connor's cover on on the cole porter tribute "red, hot and blue" ?

its amazing.

one of my favs is Joe Cocker's "With a Little Help from my Friends." possibly the only Beatles song where I prefer the cover. I liked his cover of "She Came in Through the Bathroom Window" too, but not as much as the original.

oh, that reminds me, Elliott Smith's cover of "Jealous Guy" is nice too.

I love all of Scott Walker's cover versions of Jacques Brel songs. :)

Also Momus' cover of Jacky (his version is called Nicky) is very much underrated gem.

We've just had the 30th Anniversary of Brel's death. Apart from an auction at Sotherby's in Paris the day before, it went by pretty much without mention.

At least the 25th Anniversary was marked with a big celebration in Brussels. That year my wife and I shared the spoils, Memphis for Elvis and Brussels for Brel. Both 25 years gone. It kept everyone happy.

Perhaps I should retire the name, as a mark of respect?

In 1979 I replied to a film mag personal classified ad because I wanted to buy some film booklet.

In Japan we have a tradition that cinemas in big cities sell each film's booklet.
One of them was Brel's L'Aventure c'est l'aventure although at that time I didn't know about Brel, but because of one of his co-star Lino Ventura.
However, the seller asked really high price for a secondary school pupil which he wasn't aware of.
The seller mentioned about Brel's death in his reply, it was the first time I heard of him.

Sadly I still haven't had a chance to watch the film to this day. :(

Can't pick just one... Some favorites:
Virtually everything by Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, esp. Vanessa Williams' "Save the Best for Last" (Sung to the tune of "Pretty Vacant."), and Whitney Houston's "Where to Broken Hearts Go."
I like Natalie Merchants' version of "Because the Night" a little better than the original. (By Patti Smith.)
The Offsprings' cover of the Damned "Smash it Up."
Green Day's cover of the Ramones' "Outsider."
Vice Squad's cover of Bob Dylan's "The Times They Are A-Changin'."
NOFX's cover of "Vincent" by Don Mclean is awesome.
...An of course, the Sex Pistols' covers of the Stooges' "No Fun", and The Monkees "Stepping Stone.'

My favourite cover of a Smiths song is Sandie Shaw's "Hand in Glove", but some others... er...

Liberty X covering A Night To Remember by Shalamar
Pet Shop Boys covering Where The Streets Have No Name
Manic Street Preachers covering Suicide Is Painless
Bauhaus covering Ziggy Stardust
