PETA to honor Morrissey with Linda McCartney Memorial Award (Sep. 10)

PETA is holding its 25th anniversary gala event in Hollywood, California on September 10, 2005 and this year the main humanitarian honor - the Linda McCartney Memorial Award - will be presented to Morrissey (by Chrissie Hynde)

The event is a celebration that PETA like those that PETA has held in the past that raise money and awareness of animal rights issues. Most food, services and usual 'gala' accessories are donated by the sponsors.

No mention yet of Moz actually performing at the event, but Paul McCartney did so in 1999 with Chrissie Hynde and others and that Gala was filmed and the performances were shown on television that year. So you never know...

The Smiths

"Everyone has a Smiths moment; you don't have to have been around at the time they first came out. I don't like meeting my heroes but I did meet Morrissey when I interviewed him for a magazine last year. It was horrifying. He corrected me on my grammar. I referred to something as being 'what I was proudest of '. He sneered in outrage and said, 'Or most proud of?' His antagonism seemed a little sad and contrived."

Saw Johnny Marr at Royal Festival Hall last night as part of Meltdown.

He played with Bert Jansch then The Healers came on. He introduced the second number as "a Manchester folk song" then proceeded to play Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want.

It was simply astounding - his playing was beautiful, exactly like The Smiths record, and even his singing seemed to mimic Morrissey's. As a solo performance of a Smiths song, it goes to highlight just how inadequate Boz and the gang are when Morrissey tries it. Marr was in a different league entirely.

Just delighted I was there and got to see it. Hope there are mp3s out there?

johnny marr played at london's royal festival hall last night as part of patti smith's meltdown (the event curated by morrissey last year). the night was a tribute to jimi hendrix, with different acts playing various hendrix tunes. marr played "may this be love" with robyn hitchcock (Soft Boys) singing. johnny sounded very hendrix, playing a familiar gentle blues line on his blue stratocaster. he looked a lot better in the flesh than he has on recent tv shows.

also contributing were flea (chili peppers), robert wyatt, richard lloyd & tom verlaine, jeff beck etc. the previous night patti smith performed her "horses" album including "redondo beach".

An old Armando Iannucci programme from 1994 was aired on BBC 7 on Friday 25th June at 23.00. It includes ‘The more you ignore me the closer I get’ and a sketch involving Morrissey stalking someone’s girlfriend, which is quite funny. You can hear it at this link.

The sketch is about 17 minutes in.

Tonight on Channel 4, there was a programme about adverts which featured unknown songs and made them hits. One of them was about Coca-Cola, and one of the guests said "if Coca-Cola was a British brand their adverts would have The Smiths on them and people in Birmingham would be slitting their wrists." (or something along those lines). If I hear another ill-informed armchair pundit talking about The Smiths simply as being miserable I'll scream. Idiots!
