Am I the first person to send this story in? Probably not......

"Former members of The Smiths, bassist Andy Rourke and guitarist Johnny Marr, are set to play at the Manchester versus Cancer concert on January 28 at the M.E.N. Arena.

It will be the first time they have performed publicly together since the group’s acrimonious split in 1988.(wasn't it 1987 in fact?)"

The gig is the brainchild of Rourke who hopes it will raise £1million for Manchester’s Christie Hospital - Europe’s largest cancer treatment and research centre."

Excerpt:

What was the extent of your songwriting involvement on Moz's new album Ringleader of the Tormentors?
Well, I was glad to be asked back, and I worked hard.

With the arrival of Jesse Tobias, will you still be in Moz's touring band for '06?
I do not know if I will be asked.

Many fans love the song "Southpaw" from SG, did you ever try to convince Moz to play it live?
I did once, and I think he will decide to do it at some point as he likes to change stuff around.

...
What are the 3 songs you have ever written that you're most proud of?
"Baby Come Back", "Sunny", "The Edges are No Longer Parallel", and a new tune on Ringleader called "Life Is A Pigsty."

Coachella The Film Released Next Year - Filter Magazine
by Staff | 12.06.2005

All the years of sunburns, hanging out longingly by the coveted VIP tent, one too many trips to the beer garden and watching amazing live sets, we've earned it. The powers that be are releasing Coachella--a film featuring performances from the last six years of America’s most critically acclaimed music festival.

Some performance highlights include show-stoppers from The Arcade Fire, Bright Eyes, The Crystal Method, Iggy & The Stooges, Morrissey, Oasis, The Pixies, The Polyphonic Spree, Radiohead and The White Stripes. The film also features appearances from Beck, Josh Homme, Mos Def and Lollapalooza founder Perry Farrell. The film will debut in theatres in late January 2006 and was directed by Drew Thomas.

In a recent interview for N.M.E. (December 6th issue), Oasis frontman Noel Gallagher, a big Smiths fan who has worked with Johnny Marr several times, quoted The Smiths:

"I was reading a thing about this internet thing and people go on websites and chat to each other and say, 'Have you heard such and such a band?' and that awful word: you Google it. Which is the kind of the death knell for buying records, innit?

When you get to a certain age, there is no greater thrill than walking into a fucking record shop and standing in the queue with two people who are buying a Howard Jones single and you've got a Smiths 12-inch behind them. That, for a fact, makes you twice as cool as anybody else in that record shop."

Yet another Canadian band, considered by some better than "Arcade Fire", are enjoying a meteoric rise. They are the Montreal 5-piece "The Stars", described as 'soft militant' for their catchy tunes mixed with a social conscience. They play "The Village", Dublin next Tuesday 13th December. Pat McGee, member, interviewed by the "Dublin Event Guide", says: "We love the fact that our music is beautiful and gentle, with a searing darkness. The Smiths are my favourite band of all time and others think that they are depressing, but I think they are uplifting and wonderful and I think they are political too and talk about the state of nations, but state of people - we try and do the same".

In this morning's edition of the British free daily commuter newspaper The Metro (Dec 12th), the British comedian Stewart Lee included a track by Morrissey in his choice of six tracks for the regular "On My Ipod" feature.

Amongst his choices was "I Have Forgiven Jesus" and he writes:-

"In my new stand-up set, I talk about what it's like to be accused of blasphemy, due to my involvement with Jerry Springer: The Opera. So I play this as the outro to the show. The song's asking, why would God give us desires and imagination and an intellect and then punish us for using them? Everyone used to think of Morrissey as being really miserable but the lyrics to this are hilarious. I think his latest album is as good as anything The Smiths ever did."

There is also a small photo of Morrissey with the article. I must add that Stewart Lee has always struck me as being a very Morrissey-esque figure stylistically. His obvious love of Morrissey certainly isn't a surprise to me.

Christian emo rockers Bleach, who parted ways last year, recently released a greatest hits disc, "Audio/Visual", with 3 unreleased tracks, including a cover of The Smiths' classic "Girlfriend in a Coma."

It's a good, pop-punk styled cover that certainly does the original song justice, if not adds a bit of an update to it. It's worth checking out if you're into bands like Jimmy Eat World or Weezer.

“Imagine if Mark E Smith and Morrissey fronted Big Black, produced by Phil Spector..."

This is how the band “The Wedding Present” is described in a review of a concert in London in November. They’re also described as The Smiths' fans’ second favourite band.
