2) they are made of plastic and petroleum products that will pollute the world for hundreds of years. Does that make them any better? It's debatable.

Yes, it is debatable. As far as tests being done (and who are doing the tests), I wonder what the pros and cons are of synthetic products vs animal farming/slaughter is on the world. Also, the affect of animal consumption on the individual, how it shapes one and how that in turn shapes the world, should also be taken into account.
Of course the way to go would be to stop using animals and finding a better ecological friendly product. If animal use and synthetic products were made illegal to use, then companies would be forced to find an alternative.
