Oh, it was to the Guardian I think. It was mentioned in the Alexandra Topping article. http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2010/sep/03/morrissey-china-subspecies-racism
I read this about the non retraction.....but not sure to whom the further statement was made?
Morrissey, 51, has since clarified his stance and defended his view in a further statement, saying he feels the Asian country - the largest in the world with an estimated population of 1.3 billion -...
Exactly. This article sums it up.
“Did you see the thing on the news about their treatment of animals and animal welfare? Absolutely horrific. You can’t help but feel that the Chinese are a subspecies.”
The holier-than-thou hacks at the Guardian took these forty words in the Weekend...
It was a poor choice of words maybe. I actually think he meant 'the Chinese who partake in the skinning alive trade' are a subspecies. Which I agree with. I don't think it was ever meant to include those who actually don't! But that's just how I read it.
I think the press will run with it for...
No, he never said 'Chinese people ARE....', he said 'you (he) can't help but feel.....' There's a difference. That is his opinion, nothing more. He wasn't stating it as fact, or as anybody else's opinion. That's the point I was trying to make. His opinions may be a million miles from anyone...
I don't actually believe it was a racist comment. He said about there being no animal protection laws in China, that 'you can't help but feel....' and I think he has a valid point. If he feels (because of his views) that he's of a different 'species' to those who live in that (normal to them)...
To say he'd sparked a 'row' in the same day's paper that was publishing the said comments for the first time....seems like nothing but stirring up trouble to me.
