Same here, over in the rural eastern backwaters of the Netherlands. Only regret I have is I didn't get to see them play live -- they played the Netherlands only once, in 1984, when I was all of 12 years old, and in an Amsterdam suburb at that.
True. I was also somewhat disappointed from the blandness of some anecdotes. The ones we know from Fletcher and Rogan where you come across the bit and think oh yeah, this is where the rep punches the wall and then it's left out and the story feels neutred, non-committal.
As always, not sure if I missed somebody else posting this, so apologies if I did.
Goddard compares Autobiography with Set the Boy Free and comes out in favour of the first, mainly because of style. And it might just be that some hurt shines through from Johnny's "all existing Smiths books are...
Let's just be thankful this cr@p will not be on the product itself.
Oh boy, what an eventful few days. First the excitement of a new Smiths release, then the (inevitable?) SER comedown. Trump has nothing on Moz in the world-baffling stakes.
Not to mention the other John Maher (of Buzzcocks) :-) Morris' drumming, especially on the Joy Division albums, is great, that nervous metronome drumming on "Disorder"...
Over here in The Netherlands, you cannot just use somebody's photograph without permission, even if you took the photo yourself (portretrecht, or 'portrait rights'). But then we're a civil-law country, no idea how this would work in a common-law jurisdiction. But I cannot imagine the personality...
Yes, but AFAICS only on covers of his own songs performed by his (then) friends: "Jeane" by Sandy Shaw and "Let Me Kiss You" by Nancy Sinatra.
Both feature his backing vocals, but with instruments being played by members of his band (at the time) and the record being released on the same label...
The article on the Steven film is quite insightful though. Seems they got Billy Duffy on board, who apparently remembers everything about the Nosebleeds. And there will be a scene where the Nosebleeds perform. So will we finally hear some of the Morrissey/Duffy songs performed? :-D :-O
Actually, I thought that would be the case with the one that looked liked Hatful of Hollow. But no, they chose to fill it with second-league weak indie cr@p of the kind Marr professed to hate with a vengeance. It's called How Soon Is Now? btw (of course) and the tracks are OK'ish. (Don't know if...
But it is #23 in the rock&pop biographies (#23 in Books > Biography > Film, Television & Music > Music > Rock & Pop ). Could be worse, only two places below Patti Smith's M Train. (And yes, there are more than 23 entries in the category ;-) .)
Now, in related news - 30 June is creeping close...
Heh, did the same the other week at my local record store, putting their vinyl copies of Strangeways and Louder than Bombs on the display ledge ;-)
That is, assuming the books behind the one at front are all copies of Autobio and the display wasn't engineered ;-) And books on sale aren't the...
Ha! I think basically it's a matter of being diplomatic, allowing everyone to think "their" favorite Smiths-related book is the one exception. In all honesty, I'd go with anonymous and say it's Goddard's Songs That Saved Your Life as it has all the song-related details and nearly nothing of the...
So do I. The video was more generic fact-hashing. Not much by way of new finds -- but then again, the album has been pored over for 30 years now, nearly everything that can be said about the album has already been said.
