Rick Astley does The Smiths

According to todays Metro newspaper, Rick Astley was the support act at the first of Peter Kay's run of gigs at the Manchester Evening News Arena...

Just how would Peter Kay kick off a record-breaking comedy tour that will entertain 750,000 people at 85 top nights out over the next year, grossing an estimated £26m?

With a surprise appearance from Rick Astley of course.

The Bolton funnyman invited the Newton-le-Willows singer to be the warm-up act for the first show of his epic tour at the M.E.N. Arena last night. It was a closely- guarded secret and Rick said that even his own mum didn’t know he’d been chosen to tour alongside the comic. He even did a respectable medley of Manchester classics, including one by The Smiths.

But it was Peter Kay who people were really here to see. He emerged at the back of the stage through smoke and lights, and apologised for coming on later than expected. “They blew a fuse or something back stage,” he quipped. “Seven years and they blew a fuse.”

Then it was straight into the jokes - some of them a ‘bit of blue for the dads’. “It’s nice to be back on nights,” he said.

Jokes followed about setting up a sickie at work and blokes suffering hypochondria surfing the internet thinking they’ve got a brain tumour when it’s actually an eyelash.

There were the familiar and nostalgic observations of ordinary life which make Kay so endearing for so many. There were references to members of his family, many of whom - including his nan - were in the audience for the opening night.

Nan, we were told, had been asking her grandson about modern curios such as Facetube and a film called ‘abattoir’.

With so many more dates to come, I really wouldn’t want to give too much away, but the 36-year-old’s fans won’t be disappointed. And it ends with another surprise...

Speaking after the opening night show, Kay said: “It’s incredibly comforting playing the Manchester Evening News Arena, it’s such a special place and part of my life.

“I was very nervous, as it’s a huge run of shows after a long time away from stand-up, but the response last night was unbelievable and quite emotional. It’s also a pleasure working with the amazing Rick Astley. It was a huge surprise for the audience last night and they absolutely loved him, he’s such a talented performer.” Kay added: “I think the next four weeks in Manchester are going to be very special for not just myself but everybody else involved in the show.”
