It’s a common misconception that the 80s served as some bleak nadir for music in general. Sure it was a time of hair metal, overly flamboyant new romantic style theatrics and inane pop but such generalising under values a fascinating time. Against these overcooked deeply unsubtle ventures an underground was bubbling away, a melting pot of dynamic and sincere indie rock, a place where the song was king, not the latest passing stylish fad . Many bands were pored over at this time by the fans willing to look beyond the superficial rabble that were dominating radio. Luminaries of this new wave were REM, Wire, ,Joy Division, Sonic Youth, Husker Du ,The Cure to name but a few, bands that covered many different genres. The Smiths however while paying homage to a number of styles became a genre unto themselves .By absorbing the influences of girl groups, 60s song craft, the tiniest sliver of hard rock and keeping abreast of more sounscapey peers the Smiths embodied a unique ethos which accounts for their fanatical following at the time and their still enduring appeal.
Johnny Marrs musicianship was second to none, his subtle layering and classical playing eschewed the flashy solos and empty musical meandering that was de rigueur at the time and ended up being beautiful and tied to no particular age. Backed by Mike Joyce and Andy Rourke as a very instinctual ryhtmn section the Smiths music was a tight and focused creation acting as the perfect platform for what would become the bands undisputed trademark, the wry soulful and darkly comic lyrics provided by front man Morrissey. His vignettes on love, ennui, romantic yearning and disappointment became a beacon for like minded fans the world over and was more often than not a lifeline for those that needed it. He sang of these themes with an openness and a frankness bold and new for the time and his efforts were incalculably influential to the future of indie music and pop. The musical landscape today would be unrecognisable without the work of Morrissey and the Smiths.
Morrissey continues to inspire today through his turbulent solo career which finds him in 2011 as a beloved elder statesman of his craft, recognised for his indelible contribution to music as a master lyricist. We pay tribute to the great man in his many forms, with a very special night in the Workman’s Club, May 11th. Featuring 3 acts who have been inspired by his work:
Remma, a Cork band who are a part of the story of Morrissey as he took a great interest in their talent and signed them to his Attack label a few years back. Remma deliver passionate songs hewn from the same stone as Morrisseys finest work.

The Melismatics, a critically acclaimed Rock band from Minneapolis known for their energy and ability to incorporate a diverse fusion of styles in their music.

and Oliver Cole, an artist whose own journey draws several parallels with Morrissey. As the front man and main songwriter of hugely popular Irish band “Turn” Oliver has had to re-establish his musical identity as a solo artist a task he has achieved with aplomb. Oliver releases his new single, ” Helium Heart ” at the end of June.

Each act will showcase their own wonderful original material alongside reinterpretations of classic Morrissey songs.
