I've felt somewhat out of place on the forums sometimes because, for the most part, I appreciate Morrissey's songs for being great songs. I can relate to them certainly, as someone who's always been a little bit different than most people I meet. However, as I get older, I'm finding that a...
Hmm...there's a fine line between "depressed" and "cynical." And an even finer line between "cynical" and "realist." ;)
Either way, as everyone else said, welcome to SoLow!
I find Morrissey to be more funny than depressing. Although his lyrics are so real that you CAN listen to them when depressed, and they don't seem fake or too cheery. My 11 year old daughter says she thinks Morrissey is funny too, and doesn't understand why people think he's mopey.
This is one of THE best parts of the song. The entire song shifts when he says "shifting gears" and it's incredible. And who doesn't FEEL that way, like they've been trying and trying to get somewhere but they never change?
I just wanted to thank you for that description. It's been nagging me whenever I hear the song "Who does he sound like at this part?" Now I know: Orbison!
Oh, and I think the song's OK. Nothing special but in usual Morrissey way, there's some amusing parts.
This song is one I absolutely fell in love with live, due to the circumstances I was in at the time (last verse specifically).
However, there's something just a little...off...about the rhythm of the verses for me. Can't quite place it.
So 9 it is.
I'm glad I got to see him on Day 3 of Pasadena in February...but originally I was planning on invading the 2 Mass. shows (whether my friend there liked it or not), then my school schedule made that impossible. Then I attempted to go to Knoxville but my son got sick that day. THEN I attempted to...
Isn't it funny how much emotion influences our musical likes and dislikes? I freely admit there's probably nothing "special" about this song musically. Yet I HAVE to give it a 10 for being the first Moz/Smiths song I ever listened to outside of "How Soon Is Now?" and it was so pertinent to what...
I relate to this song, too!
Was standing at a concert next to the person I would want (I want the one I can't have, dammit. )
Morrissey sang this song. I freely admit to tearing up a bit.
haha!
I've already stood on the wrong side of the song-vote, too, with at least one other song. Survived so far! And you know, I didn't like I Know It's Over at first (I thought it too dreary) but now I find it incredible. Still, I'm sure I'll be on the wrong side again.
I just know you meant to click 10 but your mouse slipped at the last second. ;)
Hypothetically speaking though, if you WERE to actually give this a 9 without slipping, what would keep it from being a 10?
This song is moving, witty and perfect.
I can't imagine anyone giving it anything other than a ten...though perhaps I might allow a 9 in case someone MEANT to click 10 but slipped. ;)
I happen to like it. It's a mix of reality and caricature. Unlike lounge singer types, he has a genuine passion for his music and fans and can't be said to be "phoning it in." At the same time, the humor certainly exists in his persona. I know the man's been removing his shirt for years but...
A couple of thoughts:
First, the stage on Letterman was TINY compared to what they usually have. They seemed to be practically on top of one another, especially with the big drum kit.
Secondly, Moz has been playing up this sort of...lounge-singer persona this year. I'm thinking...
