Favorite alternative holiday songs

I know. And it does really seem that way. But sometimes the quiet ones were secretly involved and it just goes unnoticed. Would you like to join us? I could put you in between them help keep the peace?

I’d say going off topic in a thread is a terrible offense. He posted a very normal, non-alternative Christmas song. His punishment must be severe.

Actually, that is exactly what it means.
no, it means an alternative to something. what is that something? when you think of Christmas songs you think of the traditional ones, like 'god rest ye merry gentleman', so an alternative to that would be 'santa baby' no matter how many times it's played on the radio each year. the operating premise for what makes a Christmas song alternative is 'non-traditional', not 'non-popular'.

How Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines “alternative”:

existing or functioning outside the established cultural, social, or economic system.

If something is well known and popular, it hardly exists outside the cultural or social system, does it? This is a song that has been used in commercials. This is a song that has been covered dozens of times. This is a song that plays on Christmas radio stations incessantly and is included in Christmas music compilations. It is very much a part of the system.

i never hear them sing it in church or at schools or in choirs or by carollers around Christmas time though. only on the radio where, incidentally, one might find other alternative music being played.

and actually THIS is how merriam-webster defines "alternative":

1 : offering or expressing a choice several alternative plans

2 : different from the usual or conventional: such as [note that this was only an example]

a : existing or functioning outside the established cultural, social, or economic system an alternative newspaper alternative lifestyles

b : of, relating to, or being rock music that is regarded as an alternative to conventional rock and is typically influenced by punk rock, hard rock, hip-hop, or folk music an alternative band also : of, relating to, or being music of a genre other than rock that is similarly regarded as an alternative to the conventional music of that genre

but, hey, nice try at proof texting.:thumb:

You don’t hear people sing “White Christmas” in church, schools, choirs or by carolers around Christmas either...that doesn’t make it any less of a Christmas song or any bit alternative.

Proof texting? What you added was superfluous. It is the exact same definition I posted, but reworded specifically to pertain to music. You can highlight or mark whatever you like, it doesn’t change a thing or give you a point...because your point seems to be you don’t think it’s conventional because you haven’t heard it in churches and schools and isn’t old enough or whatever. Which, sorry to say, is not the basis for conventionality of a Christmas song. You don’t get to choose that. Society does.

Surely Last Christmas (post #18, page 1) is 100 times more popular than Santa Baby?
