George Michael admits joking about Smiths reformation

He was joking.

Smiths fans: That joke isn't funny anymore - 3 News / WENN

Pop star George Michael sent fans of The Smiths into a spin by insisting a long-awaited reunion is on its way, but he has now confessed he was joking.

The former Wham! star was asked in an interview published over the weekend to reveal a secret and he replied, "The Smiths are reforming."

The comment, published by British newspaper The Guardian, sent fans of the band into meltdown because reunion rumours have been building for years despite repeated denials by the group's founders Morrissey and Johnny Marr.

However, the 'Careless Whisper' hitmaker has now quashed the speculation by admitting his remark was made in jest.

A representative for the star tells WENN, "It was just a bit of fun, so not true."

Yes I appreciate that Morrissey was an essential part of the smiths , I'm not stupid but if you think that I am remotely wrong about the smiths getting back together without Morrissey and whether it would work or not , just put johnny marr into YouTube and see the reaction of Andy joining him on stage for HSIN.

Enough said.

Uh...I was there for the NYC show where Andy came out for two songs, and while it was indeed very fun and everyone had a good time, it was not even REMOTELY like a Morrissey concert in terms of audience response or "magic." I don't say that to diss Johnny or Andy, but it was a moment of novelty. The earth did not move.

Among all the rest of the absurdity in this discussion, it's hard to think of anything more absurd than the Smiths without Morrissey—or without Marr, for that matter.

That would be like like saying, "The Beatles are back together again with Paul, Ringo, Dhani and Sean." There is NO SMITHS without Morrissey. Again, people would be there for JM and a night of Smiths songs. Johnny sings well, but those songs are not the same without Morrissey's vocals. Sorry.

Enough said, now.
