What does everyone think of James (the band)?

I always like James, but they were always erratic I thought. Some amazing stuff and some stuff that just didnt seem to fit in with the rest of the record. A good example being the "whiplash" album. Stunning in parts and odd as hell in others.

Just a humble opinion of course!

I thought they were great. Although I only took notice of them after the Greatest Hits album, as I was still quite young. 'Sometimes' can still spirit me away to a whole different dimension. The Millionaires album was good at the time, but I've gone off it in recent years.
However, I did have the good fortune to catch them live at a Radio 1 road show. Tim Booth is one of the most energetic and charismatic performers I've seen. Fabulous. (not as good as Moz tho, obviously)
I did check out some of the stuff he did with Angelo Badalmenti as 'Booth and the Bad Angel'. Strange, but I loved it at the time ... think it was the Twin Peaks connection and that track 'Please Fall in Love With Me'. Cliched as it sounds, it helps to fancy a star when you're a teenage girl.
Hasn't Tim Booth gone a little weird in recent years though? None of that gorgeous curly hair for one. Never mind, we'll always have James.

i love laid. wah wah's not bad either, though a little weird. haven't heard any other albums in their entirety but i'm sure they're not bad. you'd think they could come up with a better name for their band than james though...

Brilliant. I am really missing their Xmas concerts. Seen them loads of times and have all their albums but not so keen on Tim Booth's solo album. I met Tim Booth & Jim Glennie a couple of times and they are lovely. Jim Glennie was catching a bus in Piccadilly (and that was after Sit Down topped the charts!)

Re: I See You fallinG....

A great song indeed Betty.

"Out To Get You" then "Laid" to "Lose Control" and well "How Was It For you?" followed by "Say Something"...."Ring The Bells" indeed.

"I'm so alone tonight
My bed feels larger than when I was small
Lost in memories
Lost in all the sheets and old pillows
So alone tonight
Miss you more than I will let you know
Miss the outline of your back
Miss you breathing down my neck
They're all out to get you
Once again they are all out to get you
Once again
Insecure, what you gonna do
Feel so small they could step on you
Called you up, answering machine
When the human touch
Is what is need
What I need
Is you
I need you
Looked in the mirror, I don't know who I am anymore
The face is familiar
But the eyes, the eyes give it all away
They're all out to get you
Once again they're all out to get you
Here they come again
Insecure what you gonna do
Feel so small they could step on you
Called you up, answering machine
When the human touch
Is what I need
What I need
Is you
If you let me breathe
They're all out to get you
Once again
To get you
Once again"

The first two albums (Stutter and Stripmine) are the best in my opinion, but James will always be the second best thing to come out of Manchester. They're the band I have seen play live the most times, i've lost count how many but at least 40 times, I was heartbroken when they split up, went to their last show and cried like a baby.

Re: "Laid" is defo underrated.

Under-rated? You can't go to an indie night or pub with a jukebox without it pumping out :)

Waltzing Along is a good tune too.

We all know Sometimes is the best James song

All those who disagree are wrong.

Me too. I remember reading in city life everyone likes James but they're nobody's favourite band. I thought that was awful and would have liked to be able to say they are mine but of course there's The Smiths. I reckon it's good enough anyway to have so many people buy all your albums and go to the gigs.
