Get off the stage

My wife (then GF) and I were walking in golden gate park. We were young, dating and holding hands. We saw an older couple sitting on a park bench. They were close to each other and holding hands. I caught eye contact with the man who must have been fifty years my senior. He smiled at me like he knew, I was in love. I smiled too, like I knew that he was in love, but for a very long time with the woman he sat next to. Looking back now. I want to be that guy still holding hands in my old age with the girl I love.

My wife and I have been talking regularly about how long I should continue working. We have arrived at a window of 5 to 10 years. In five years I will be 50.

When the kids go to college we want to travel and wander the United States. We have done quite a bit of this in an RV when the kids were young. My wife and I have been looking at the Mercedes Sprinter vans converted for travel. We have talked for many hours of spending years traveling each state of this country. We have a couple of other ideas for international living as well since we have done that when the kids were young. Still a few more years to figure it out though.

If you are young, you have to plan now. I actually can't believe I am getting so close. This is already 20 years in the making with our savings plans. I am glad we started with a vision a long time ago.

Personally, I am in the best shape of my life. But I have no idea whether or when I will be riddled with some irreparable condition. Life can be so full that it goes by quickly. I want as much retired time with my family as possible.
