BBC Radio 1 QueenIsDead

I haven't got the time for fights, I'm too busy crying because I'm old and dismiss rap, hip-hop, r and b and all the benefit I am missing out on.

Wow.

I can't believe a simple announcement about a radio show would cause such clamour.

I blame Helen Bach completely! :lbf:

Christ, I can just imagine the car crash this will be!
How to relate/explain 'The Queen Is Dead' to the Radio1 audience of foeti...
Presented by 'Nihal' and Reggie Yates no doubt

Laters....innit.

Hmm,
it maybe worth giving the item ago before pulling on your DM's. At least it may reach new listeners.

Another lyrical gem from another track off an album that I am told is a "classic" and "very good"..

That's probably the worst song on the album, maybe the only one that I would actually say I don't like. You're reaction to it, as well as that of Uncleskinny, would probably be very similar to what a Jay-Z fan might think of 'Roy's Keen' if I used that to illustrate the extent of Morrissey's lyrical prowess.

Ok, here are the full lyrics from the first single from this album. I am just taking them at random, still searching for that elusive golden nugget amidst the manure, although one would assume that a single, by definition, is considered a highlight from any album.

[Intro: Jay-Z (Pharrell)]
woo, uh, uh, bounce is back
Uh, uh, uh, yeah, uh, your boy is back
(Sexy sexy) I know y'all miss the bounce
Need to bounce for the sexy you know

[Verse 1: Jay-Z]
Yeah ma, your dude is back, maybach roof is back
Tell the whole world the truth is back
You ain't got to argue about who could rap
Cause the proof is back just go through my rap
New York New York yeah where my troopers at
Where my hustlers where my boosters at
I don't care what you do for stacks
I know the world glued you back to the wall
You gotta brawl to that
I been through that, been shot at shoot back
Gotta keep it peace like a buddhist
I ain't a New Jack nobody 'gon Wesley Snipe me
It's less than likely, move back
Let I breathe Jedi knight
The more space I get the better I write
(Oh) Never I write, but, if, ever I write
I need the space to say whatever I like, now just

[Chorus: Jay-Z (Pharrell)]
(Change clothes and go) You know I stay fresh to death, boy from the projects
And I'm a take you to the top of the globe so let's go (so let's exchange numbers and go)
Uh huh yeah, uh (And girl I promise you, no substitute) It's just me

[Verse 2: Jay-Z]
And I 'gon tell you again let's get ghost in the phantom
You could bring your friend we could make this a tandem
You could come by yourself and you could stand him
Best believe I sweat out weaves, give afropuffs like R.A.G.E.
Awww you get If you could move it
Back it on up like a U Haul truck
Then run and tell them thugs you heard Hovi knew shit
He and the boy for real make beautiful music
He is to the east coast what Snoop is, to the west coast what Face is to Houston
Young Hov in the house is so necessary
No bra with that blouse is so necessary
No panties in jeans that's so necessary
Now why you frontin on me is that necessary
Do I to you look like a lame
Who don't understand a bra with a mean shoe game
Whose up on Dot Dot Dot and Vera Wang
Ma are you insane, let's just
(Woman speaking: What you want me to do?)

[Bridge: Jay-Z (Pharrell)]
Uh, uh (Sexy sexy) Woo!woo! (Ah ah!!!)
Uh huh woo!(Sexy sexy) It's so necessary ma) (Ah ah!!!)
Uh huh, woo! (Sexy sexy) That's right it's a groove (Ah ah!!!)
Uh huh, it's a groove (Sexy sexy) bring it back (Ah ah!!!!)

[Verse 3: Jay-Z]
Young Hov in the house is so necessary
No bra with that blouse is so necessary
No panties in jeans it's so necessary
Why you frontin on me?
Let's go to my hotel cause this don't go well
With those S Dots, gotta stay fresh ma
Ma, I don't shop where the rest buy
Oh no ma please respect ma
Jiggy this is probably purple label
Or that BBC shit or it's probably tailored
But y'all niggaS actin way to tough
Throw on a suit get it tapered up, and let's just

[Chorus: Jay-Z (Pharrell)]
(Change clothes and go) You know I stay fresh to death, boy from the projects
And I'm a take you to the top of the globe so let's go (So let's exchange numbers and go)
Uh huh yeah, uh (And girl I promise you, no substitute) It's just me

[Outro: Jay-Z (Pharrell)]
(Ah ah!!!) Uh uh (Sexy sexy) woo! sing along (Ah ah!!!)
Yeah, uh (Sexy sexy) turn your radio up (Ah ah!!!)
Woo! (Sexy sexy) Put your hands in the air if your in the club (Ah ah!!!)
Uh! Snap your fingers now (Sexy sexy) uh, woo, uh (Ah ah!!!)woo!
Uh, uh, your boy is back
Uh huh, uh, uh, uh, your bounce is back
Uh, uh, woo, uh Hov is back,[laugh] peace [echoed] !!!

By comparison, the below-average "Roy's Keen" is a masterpiece of lyrical dexterity.

End of the day, if you don't appreciate hip hop, you're not going to appreciate Jay-Z, let alone 'The Black Album' (which I've never actually seen get referred to as his best until this thread sprung up). If we were debating the merits of 2pac, Public Enemy, KRS-ONE, Nas, or even Eminem, I'd argue until the cows come home. As it is, I don't even like Jay-Z that much. But, if we must, the following 'Black Album' songs are the stand-outs, IMO of course (though, if you must read the lyrics, you should at least bare in mind that the context of 'The Black Album' is that it was meant to be his last. It's self-reflective, and the arrogance is justifiable within the context of his career and the hip hop scene of the day):

December 4th
What More Can I Say?
99 Problems
Lucifer
My 1st Song

The others range from crap (as in a couple of examples you actually used) to pretty good. Like I said, it's a "very good" album, certainly not his best, and definitely not the pinnacle of hip hop as Mr. Zane Lowe insanely suggests. And, I must stress, I'm not even a big Jay-Z fan, and there are other hip hop artists who I'd gladly fight to defend over him.

I am a middle-aged European and I suppose I will never understand the appeal of hip-hop. I haven't the foggiest notion what the lyrics mean.

Anyhow, just to keep the thread going, what about a discussion on the merits of Fatboy Slim and The White Stripes? As Skinny has quite rightly pointed out, they are on the same list as TQID plus I don't like being told what to do. :thumb:

Well then, it's no wonder why you might describe Jay-Z (and most hip hop in general) as "nonsense" if that's where you're coming from! That said, in my old age (24), I'm finding myself unable to understand any of the music that my little brother listens to. I understand the words coming out of the singers mouths all right, but it seems that there's something about the way in which they string those words together that makes those songs incomprehensible to my ears.

That said, I used to be a fan of Fatboy Slim. I loved 'You've Come a Long Way, Baby' back in my secondary school days. But now, aside from one or two of the singles, the rest of it sounds very much like noise to me. However, Fatboy Slim will always have my utmost respect for the music video to 'Weapon of Choice' (from a different album).

I never really got into the White Stripes, although I did try. They sound pretty generic to me. However, as far as "generic" indie music goes, they're a cut above most.

I think that Zane Lowe's list is very odd indeed. But, then again, I think that most people would probably find my list to be quite strange too. And I can't knock Lowe too much, because we both have TQID on our lists.

All those dissing Jay-Z are obviously racists but what do you expect from Morrissey fans?

Fatboy Slim - well he was in the Housemartins. I have made a better album than Fatboy Slim. It involved me taping my own 12 year old farts on a double deck ghetto blaster and then trying to load it up on an old Spectrum 48k computer. And recording said noise.

I wonder if Mike Joyce will be interviewed? 1/4 on Betfair now

Alright, but answer me this the_kaz....does Jay-Z have Johnny Marr?

No

Zane Lowe - QID tonight

Apologies if this has already been posted but Zane Lowe tonight on radio 1 at 19.00 hours is playing the WHOLE of Queen Is Dead album and special guests will discuss its importance.

Chris Moyles show this morning did a bit of a micky take on the premis of the show when his young producer Aled who loves the likes of Kylie and Madonna, did his own review of the album track by track. Needless to say he wasnt impressed and boringly found it "depressing"......what an unusual take on the Smiths, never heard that before.:(

Hopefully tonight will get more appreciation for this brilliant piece of music.:)

Re: Zane Lowe - QID tonight

There was another thread somewhere...

Listening to it now... it's just fantastic listening to those old interviews and loads and loads of Smiths... I think the album is being played from 8pm.

I can't help that I'm still listening to Dusty Springfield whilst the rest of the world is dancing at the Hacienda :)

Re: Zane Lowe - QID tonight

I wonder if they will play Some Girls Bigger Than Others without the fade-out?

Am I the only one listening to this...?

Dave

Re: Zane Lowe - QID tonight

I'm listening too :thumb: Missed the start though, will have to listen to the interview again.

Re: Zane Lowe - QID tonight

Some Girls faded.... :(

Just listened in on I Player.
Never really heard anything really new.
It just reaffirmed what I have know for years.
Some people just don't "get it"
But lots do.
