T'ai Chi anyone?

They are starting T'ai Chi classes for beginners in our village hall! :)

It says in the leaflet that it "reduces anxiety, depression, chronic pain conditions and insomnia" and that it "boots the immune system, improves respiratory functions, burns calories, dramatically improves balance, provides cardiovascular benefits, is a powerful stress management tool and slows aspects of the aging process!"

On top of all that the first two lessons are FREE!

I think I might give it a bash...hard to say no with that impressive list of benefits! :thumb:

Anyone here tried it?

I tried it and it was very nice but instead of reducing my stress levels, it increased them, because I was unable to remember the sequence of the movements. :o

No idea about T'ai Chi but I say if it's free- go for it!

(And if it all goes horribly wrong you could try my favourite disaster strategy- running away :thumb:)

T'ai Chi is great. It's all about relaxing and not thinking. Good for flexibility strength and calmness. We used to spend the first ten minutes of each class lying down doing nothing.

You don't have to wear lycra.
Hope you like it and go for the second class.

Thanks all...the first class is next week so I'll let you know how I get on...it's one of those things I've always fancied having a go at so it's a great opportunity.

I feel more peaceful and tranquil already and I haven't even been yet! (although that may just be the thought of a whole child-free hour to myself!) :)

Well, I haven't done any Tai Chi myself but have been doing Wing Chun (classical Ving Tsun) in my younger years. We frequently met with Tai Chi people as they generally trained just before or after us. When we were few (and we were), and they too, we did training in the same room.

I got to know a few Tai Chi sifus, and I think the health benefits are real - judging from the age and health of those who were teaching Tai Chi. But you have to think "chinese martial arts": long term. These combined effects will probably show after 7-10 years of practice.

First off, you'll need to train the very basics of stance and limited movements. It seems simple and easy, but it isn't.

In short: it will take time, effort and dedication to get all the benefits. It will feel great in the beginning as you'll have to concentrate on simple things (breathing patterns and rhythms, stance, movement). You'll then probably move onto a series of combinations in isolation, and then will move onto a whole figure.

It's both easy and difficult. The devil's in the details, and those details are important.

Enjoy.

Yes Alma give it a go - especially at no cost! Daughter did it for a term at school in her lunch break and loved it!

Wow! Thanks for taking the trouble to post such a helpful and full reply...much appreciated! :)

According to the Wii fit board I have "almost perfect balance"...and I've done a bit of yoga in the past so that might help with the breathing....it's not much...but it's a start! :blushing:

Thank you again MILVA! :thumb:
